Josh JohnsonCIN -QBjoining the Bengals
The Bengals have agreed to a 2-year deal with QB Josh Johnson. The former Buc spent training camp with the Niners last year before joining the Browns for part of the season. Johnson started 5 games over 3 seasons in Tampa Bay to begin his career. He showed impressive athleticism but also threw 5 TDs vs. 10 INTs. Then he reunited with his college coach in San Fran and couldn't stick on the roster. Cincinnati needed a new backup after Bruce Gradkowski signed with Pittsburgh. The Bengals also pursued Ryan Fitzpatrick but lost him to the Titans.
Josh JohnsonCIN -QBsigns with 49ers
The 49ers have signed QB Josh Johnson to a 2-year contract. It's an intriguing move if only because Niners HC Jim Harbaugh coached Johnson at the University of San Diego from 2004-2006. As a starter in '05 and '06, Johnson tossed 70 TDs vs. just 13 INTs. Of course, his playing time has been sparse at the pro level. In 16 appearances over 3 seasons, he's completed just 54% of his passes with 5 TDs and 10 INTs. QB Alex Smith would need to fall flat on his face for Johnson to get a crack at the starting job in 2012.
Josh JohnsonCIN -QBcould be used in the Wildcat
Bucs HC Raheem Morris says the team is working on a Wildcat package featuring QBs Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson. Both guys are extremely athletic and are able to make plays with their legs. Morris is specifically looking for ways to get the ball to Johnson, who he described as "so explosive and so talented." Morris continued, "the league's going to a Wildcat format and he can run the football. He creates mismatches with people, he creates different problems. So anything you can do to win a football game you try to do." It won't be enough to give Johnson any fantasy value, but the new look could help Freeman's outlook.
Josh JohnsonCIN -QBBucs, Rams discussing blockbuster trade
Scout.com reports that the Rams and Bucs have been discussing a trade that would send QB Josh Johnson to St. Louis along with the Bucs 1st-round pick (3rd overall) and a 2nd or 3rd-rounder for the Rams' 1st overall pick. Tampa would snag Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh in this case, while the Rams might grab the rookie QB of their choice. We'd bet against this trade happening, but everyone loves a good rumor as we head towards the draft!
Josh JohnsonCIN -QBBucs draft gets mixed reviews
Tampa Bay added QB Josh Johnson (San Diego) in the 5th round last weekend, capping off a strange draft for Jon Gruden. They now have a truckload of QBs on the roster - the rookie Johnson, Garcia, Griese, Simms, McCown, & Gradkowski. Tampa Bay drafted CB Aqib Talib (Kansas) at pick #20. Talib is just the second DB the Buccaneers have ever drafted in the 1st round. In 1986, Tampa Bay took SMU’s Rod Jones with the 25th overall pick. Talib's off-field stuff drew more attention than his on-field lately, and many wonder if he has discipline. He's about to bag some $8-10m guaranteed at slot #20. Tampa also got WR Dexter Jackson in the 2nd and G Jeremy Zuttah in the 3rd. Zuttah has sleeper buzz all over him. NFL Network's Mike Mayock liked Tampa's draft, Mel Kiper did not.
