S Thomas DeCoud re-signed with the Falcons on Monday. The veteran would have been an unrestricted free agent. Instead, it appears he and William Moore will remain the starting duo at the back of new DC Mike Nolan's crew. DeCoud was a decent IDP DB early last season but tailed off. He's not a special option overall. Moore carries greater upside.
James Sanders drew the start at FS for the Falcons on Sunday night. He played 90% of the snaps. Yet, Thomas DeCoud is still listed as the starter on the newest "unofficial" depth chart. DC Brian Van Gorder says the situation will be a weekly competition: “We’ll keep the ideal of (Sanders) and Thomas competing for the free safety position. I think it’s a good situation to have. They’ll both come in here and work hard. We’ll wait until the end of the week, make a decision and go.” Neither is a strong IDP target, though a potentially high-powered offense could start to pressure opponents into throwing more.
