The Falcons got busy on defense Tuesday, signing DT Paul Soliai and DE Tyson Jackson and releasing S Thomas DeCoud.  Soliai arrives on a 5-year, $33 million deal with $14 million guaranteed.  The 340-pound NT should make a huge difference for a run D that proved weak in 2013.  Jackson, another run-stopper, gets $25 million over 5 years.  He played 3-4 DE in Kansas City after joining the Chiefs as the #3 overall pick by then-GM Scott Pioli, who just joined Atlanta's front office.  Jackson boasts just 9 sacks over 5 NFL seasons but tallied 16 in his final 3 years as a 4-3 DE at LSU.  Neither he nor Soliai figures to be much of an IDP help.  But they should bolster the Falcons D and help newly re-signed DT Jonathan Babineaux find room to work inside.  Atlanta also released S Thomas DeCoud after 6 seasons.

S Thomas DeCoud re-signed with the Falcons on Monday. The veteran would have been an unrestricted free agent. Instead, it appears he and William Moore will remain the starting duo at the back of new DC Mike Nolan's crew. DeCoud was a decent IDP DB early last season but tailed off. He's not a special option overall. Moore carries greater upside.

James Sanders drew the start at FS for the Falcons on Sunday night. He played 90% of the snaps. Yet, Thomas DeCoud is still listed as the starter on the newest "unofficial" depth chart. DC Brian Van Gorder says the situation will be a weekly competition: “We’ll keep the ideal of (Sanders) and Thomas competing for the free safety position. I think it’s a good situation to have. They’ll both come in here and work hard. We’ll wait until the end of the week, make a decision and go.” Neither is a strong IDP target, though a potentially high-powered offense could start to pressure opponents into throwing more.
