Justin Blackmon JAX -WR

getting a fresh start

Jaguars new HC Gus Bradley is willing to give WR Justin Blackmon a fresh start.  "We’ve had extended conversations," Bradley said of his relationship with the 2012 1st-round pick.  "He looks me in the eye when he’s talking to me. When I talk to him about trust and things like that, I feel it hits home with him. He responds the way I hope he responds."  There's been speculation that the Jags could consider cutting ties with Blackmon, but that won't be the case.  Neither of his DUIs happened under Bradley's watch, and he remains the most talented WR on the roster.  In fantasy football, the off-field issues put a dent in Blackmon's short and long-term outlooks.  But he retains plenty of upside.

focus and consistency are concerns

The National Football Post hears that the new Jaguars regime is concerned about WR Justin Blackmon’s focus. They’ve “found him to be too easily distracted” and believe it’s affected his performance and consistency. Blackmon finished his rookie campaign with 64 catches, 865 yards and 5 TDs. But a huge chunk of that production came in a 236-yard outburst against the Texans in November. Blackmon was held under 50 yards in 9 of 16 games. That points to the lack of consistency the team is worried about. The new front office has no allegiance to Blackmon. And his 4-game suspension has him on thin ice. We’ll be keeping a close eye on his development this year.

Justin Blackmon JAX -WR

suspended 4 games

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon has been suspended for the first 4 games of the 2013 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.  Blackmon has been arrested for DUI in both 2010 and 2012.  The 5th overall pick of last year’s draft, Blackmon finished his rookie campaign with 64 catches for 865 yards and 5 TDs. He was slated to open the season in the starting lineup alongside Cecil Shorts. Free-agent addition Mohamed Massaquoi looks like the favorite to replace Blackmon during September. The news obviously puts a sizeable dent in Blackmon’s 2013 fantasy outlook, but he’ll still be worth considering in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts as a potential WR3 for the final 12 games of the year.

will get Cromartie in coverage

Jets HC Rex Ryan revealed that CB Antonio Cromartie will spend "most of the time" covering Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon on Sunday.  Cro has been a stud this season, sitting 4th among CBs in Pro Football Focus' coverage rankings.  He's allowed just 42% of passes to be completed against him.  The news is reason to leave Blackmon on fantasy benches this week.  It also means that WR Cecil Shorts will be a strong option if he can get cleared from that concussion.

probable for Week 13

Like teammate Cecil Shorts, Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon (groin) put in a limited practice Friday and I probable for Sunday's game against the Bills. The team was just resting him on Thursday. Blackmon is a WR3 with upside in this weekend's plus matchup.

out Thursday with groin

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon was held out of Thursday's practice with a groin injury.  He was a full-go on Wednesday, and we haven't heard anything on the severity of the injury.  Check back tomorrow for another update.

needs to be fed the ball

Jaguars GM Gene Smith wants to see the team "feed" WR Justin Blackmon the ball.  We can't blame him after he paid the guy $18.5 million guaranteed.  Through 5 games, Blackmon has been targeted only 31 times.  That's 33rd among WRs.  Blackmon needs to be more efficient though.  He's catching just 42% of his looks with a 9.2 yards-per-catch average.  He's been charged with 3 drops.  More targets would certainly be good news for Blackmon's fantasy outlook.  But it still might not be enough to get him on the WR3 radar.

in-sync with Blaine Gabbert

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon hauled in 4 balls for 72 yards in Thursday night's preseason game against the Ravens.  He was clearly QB Blaine Gabbert's top target, seeing 8 looks in 2-and-a-half quarters of action.  Speaking of Gabbert, he looks much better this preseason than he did last.  Not good enough to be a real fantasy option, but good enough to support Blackmon.  The rookie now has 8 grabs for 120 yards and a score in about 5 quarters of preseason action.  He could be a viable WR3 right out of the gate.

already working with 1st-team

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon is already working with the 1st-team offense -- just 6 days after ending his holdout.  It's not surprising considering Blackmon's talent level, his lofty draft status, and Jacksonville's shaky WR corps.  HC Mike Mularkey is looking to get the rookie as many reps with QB Blaine Gabbert as possible.  Blackmon will be in Jacksonville's Week 1 starting lineup, but he won't be a recommended early-season fantasy option as a 1st-year player on a subpar passing game.

finally signs

The Jaguars and WR Justin Blackmon have finally agreed to a 4-year deal.  The 5th-overall pick ended up missing a week-and-a-half of camp, and he's not expected to play in the team's preseason opener on Friday.  While Blackmon is still a good bet to be in the Week 1 starting lineup, he's well behind the curve.  Don't count on him as an early-season fantasy starter.  He could emerge as a WR3 option in the 2nd half of the year though.

still not signed, not in camp

Still unsigned -- largely because of his June DUI arrest -- Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon is missing valuable training camp reps.  “He’s got to catch up on what is being installed now and everything else he has missed," HC Mike Mularkey said.  "I believe this, if you unsure on what you’re doing, you can’t play to the speed you want to play at because you’re thinking too much."  Between the missed camp time, the off-field issues, and a shaky QB situation, Blackmon is looking like nothing more than bench depth in fantasy leagues this season.

"very unlikely" to be suspended

ESPN's Chris Mortensen believes Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon is "very unlikely" to be suspended for this past weekend's DUI arrest.  "Unlikely, I'd say, to be suspended, unless extenuating circumstances are found," Mort says.  We thought Blackmon was in hotter water because of his previous 2010 DUI arrest, but Mortensen is as clued-in as any reporter in the nation, so his opinion carries lots of weight.  Expect Blackmon to be on the field or the season-opener, but the rookie is on extremely thin ice.  It's just another reason not to overvalue him in fantasy drafts this summer.

Updating a previous item, Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon blew a .24 before being arrested for aggravated DUI early Sunday morning.  He was pulled over for driving out of his lane and going 60 in a 35 mph zone.  Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio confirms that the NFL can discipline Blackmon, despite the fact that he's not yet under contract.  The league can also take his 2010 DUI arrest into account when deciding on punishment.  Blackmon could be looking at a 1-2 game ban.

arrested for DUI

Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon was arrested on an aggravated DUI charge early Sunday morning.  His blood-alcohol content was reportedly above .15.  Blackmon was previously arrested for DUI back in October of 2010.  It's unclear if Commissioner Goodell will take that into account when handing down punishment.  We'll update Blackmon's status when we learn more.

ahead of the curve

While Jaguars OC Bob Bratkowski admits that WR Justin Blackmon still has some work to do in learning the offense, he says the 1st-rounder is "ahead of where you think most rookies would be."  Blackmon missed the final day of rookie minicamp with a sore foot caused by new cleats.  But he's back on the field at OTAs.  And he's impressing already.  “We watched him doing a drill, he looks an absolute stud,” LB Paul Posluszny said.  Blackmon figures to step right in as Jacksonville's #1 WR.  His fantasy impact will hinge on what kind of QB play he gets from Blaine Gabbert and/or Chad Henne.

misses workout with sore foot

Jacksonville's top pick, WR Justin Blackmon, missed the final day of rookie camp Sunday with a sore foot. We don't want to overreact, but this probably threatens his career and obviously turns him into an immediate draft bust. Either that or it's no big deal, which is what the team says. Coaches figured there was no reason to push anything on the final day of the first spring workout. Doing so could risk not only further aggravation of the trouble spot but overcompensation with a different part of his feet or legs. It's a marathon, after all. Not a sprint.

heading to Jacksonville

The Jaguars traded up 2 spots to #5 overall to nab Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon. The 6’1, 215-pounder plays a lot bigger, consistently picking up big-time yardage after the catch. He’s not a burner but has enough speed to force DBs to respect the go-route. Blackmon figures to join WR Laurent Robinson in Jacksonville’s starting lineup from Day 1. But he’ll need QB Blaine Gabbert to take a giant leap forward to be a consistent fantasy option in 2012.
