Ahhh. The 1st round. You have a fresh cheat sheet (and maybe a fresh beverage) in front of you. Every player is at your disposal. It’s time to draft the pillar that you’ll build the rest of your team around.
How should you attack the 1st round this year? Let’s talk it through.
Safety vs. Upside
In the 1st round, “safety” wins this battle by default. If we define “upside” as a player’s potential to outperform his draft position, it’s impossible for a 1st-rounder to possess significant upside. These guys are expected to finish near the top of their positions in fantasy points.
So safety should be top of mind with your 1st pick. In other words, the old adage rings true: “You can’t win your fantasy league in the 1st round, but you can lose it.”
How do we target relatively safe players? One way is to avoid guys with high injury risk. Our friends at Sports Injury Predictor can help in that department.
