2017 Reliability Rankings: RB (PPR)

By Matt Schauf 9:04pm EDT 4/18/18

If you wanted to top Todd Gurley’s production at RB last year, you would’ve needed to combine Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram into a single player -- and even then it would’ve been close.

Fantasy’s top RB for 2017 not only delivered big points. He did so consistently and hit the high end more frequently than anyone else.

Gurley finished just 1 game all year -- Week 5 vs. Seattle -- outside of starter-level fantasy scoring. He finished 12 of the other 14 weeks (sitting out Week 17) with a top-13 level PPR score among RBs. That included 11 games of 19.6+ PPR points.

DraftSharks.com has been posting Reliability Rankings at the end of each season for a while. (Check out the 2016, 2015 and 2014 editions.) Below you’ll find the start of the 2017 version, but I changed up the method a bit.

The Method

There’s certainly nothing wrong with simply tallying the number of times a back finished among the top 12, 24, etc. at his position in a given week. But week-to-week scoring can vary quite a bit. The 13th-best score 1 week might land you 5th another week -- especially when byes come into play.

So I found the median weekly score for each spot in the RB rankings across the 17 weeks of the 2017 season. And because there isn’t necessarily much difference between ranking 12th or 13th in a given week, I checked for the biggest scoring gaps.

The columns represent the specific rank, the median score for that spot and the difference between that score and the score for the rank immediately below it.

As you can see, the separation between consecutive spots shrinks as we move down the rankings. I bolded the levels I ended up tallying for all fantasy-scoring RBs.

Top 1 (34.6+ points, ranked by total finishes)

The RB1 spot delivered more separation over #2 than we saw between any other levels in the rankings, so let’s start there … where you won’t be surprised by the leader.

1. Todd Gurley, Rams -- 3 of 15 games -- 20%
2T. Le’Veon Bell, Steelers -- 2 of 15 -- 13.3%
2T. Kareem Hunt, Chiefs -- 2 of 15* -- 13.3%
4T. Alvin Kamara, Saints -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
4T. Melvin Gordon, Chargers -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
6. Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys -- 1 of 10 -- 10%

Hunt officially played in all 16 games but carried just once before hitting the sideline in Week 17. So I’m not counting that contest against his percentage.

There’s no sneaky production here, as all 6 of these runners can currently be found in Round 1 -- or at least on the fringe, in Gordon’s case -- of best-ball ADP lists.

Top 4 (24.8+ points)

The 2.8-point gap between #3 and #4 in the season-long median rankings beats the 2.2 gap between 4 and 5. But I chose the 4-spot as the next cut-off to capture performances at both of those levels, before a smaller dip from 5 to 6.

1. Todd Gurley, Rams -- 7 of 15 games -- 46.7%
2. Le’Veon Bell, Steelers -- 6 of 15 -- 40%
3. Alvin Kamara, Saints -- 5 of 16 -- 31.3%
4T. Kareem Hunt, Chiefs -- 4 of 15 -- 26.7%
4T. LeSean McCoy, Bills -- 4 of 16 -- 25%
6T. Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys -- 3 of 10 -- 30%
6T. Melvin Gordon, Chargers -- 3 of 16 -- 18.8%
6T. Mark Ingram, Saints -- 3 of 16 -- 18.8%
9T. Chris Thompson, Washington -- 2 of 10 -- 20%
9T. Devonta Freeman, Falcons -- 2 of 14 -- 14.3%
9T. Jamaal Williams, Packers -- 2 of 14 -- 14.3%
9T. Jordan Howard, Bears -- 2 of 16 -- 12.5%
9T. Jerick McKinnon, Vikings -- 2 of 16 -- 12.5%
9T. Dion Lewis, Patriots -- 2 of 16 -- 12.5%
15T. Dalvin Cook, Vikings -- 1 of 4 -- 25%
15T. Adrian Peterson, Cardinals -- 1 of 6** -- 16.7%
15T. Ty Montgomery, Packers -- 1 of 8 -- 12.5%
15T. Rod Smith, Cowboys -- 1 of 10 -- 10%
15T. Rex Burkhead, Patriots -- 1 of 10 -- 10%
15T. Matt Forte, Jets -- 1 of 12 -- 8.3%
15T. Leonard Fournette, Jaguars -- 1 of 13 -- 7.7%
15T. Austin Ekeler, Chargers -- 1 of 13 -- 7.7%
15T. Joe Mixon, Bengals -- 1 of 14 -- 7.1%
15T. Corey Clement, Eagles -- 1 of 14 -- 7.1%
15T. Alex Collins, Ravens -- 1 of 15 -- 6.7%
15T. Jonathan Stewart, Panthers -- 1 of 15 -- 6.7%
15T. DeMarco Murray, Titans -- 1 of 15 -- 6.7%
15T. Christian McCaffrey, Panthers -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
15T. Tarik Cohen, Bears -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
15T. Giovani Bernard, Bengals -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
15T. C.J. Anderson, Broncos -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
15T. Theo Riddick, Lions -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%
15T. Lamar Miller, Texans -- 1 of 16 -- 6.3%

Peterson played more than 6 games last season, but his only meaningful fantasy production came over the 6 games he spent with Arizona before landing on IR (neck).

Note the 8 total top-4 outings between Kamara and Ingram. It’s not hard to understand why you can’t count on either making it out of Round 2 in current best-ball drafting -- though Jared and I have already expressed our discomfort with Kamara’s 1st-round ADP.

Also note the 3 combined top-4 finishes between Packers Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery. Don’t let the committee distract you from the fact that this remains a good fantasy situation -- especially with Aaron Rodgers returning healthy for 2018.

Top 8 (19.9+ points)

Perhaps I should have made “top 10” the next cutoff to envelope the 4 straight positions with differences of 0.9 or 1.0. I just didn’t want to get too far from the 1.2-point gap between RB6 and RB7.

1. Todd Gurley, Rams -- 10 of 15 -- 66.7%
2. Le’Veon Bell, Steelers -- 9 of 15 -- 60%

We saw 52 RBs deliver at least 1 top-8 level fantasy week, up from 33 RBs in top-4 category. Only 3 teams failed to get at least 1 top-8 performance from an RB: the Colts, Seahawks and Buccaneers. Here are the totals for the other 29 backfields:

1. Saints 14
2. Rams 10
3. Steelers 9
4. Jaguars 8
5T. Vikings 7
5T. Chargers 7

Beyond Fournette delivering a solid 5 weeks of top-8 level scoring among his 13 appearances, Yeldon and Ivory tallied 3 more such performances. Jacksonville logged more rushing attempts than any other team in the league last year and targeted RBs on 25% of throws. Fournette, Yeldon and Ivory each topped 20 catches in 2017, and 3 different RBs scored receiving TDs.

I have to admit that Fournette’s recent history of lower-body injuries and 44% rushing Success Rate last year (26th in the league) have made me wary of his 1st-round ADP. But this reminds me to look at Fournette’s week-to-week value and not worry so much about the 2-3 games he might miss. (That’s why our fantasy teams have fantasy benches, Matt.)

Even the sad-trombone backfields from Indy, Seattle and Tampa Bay got involved with this group -- with the Bucs even managing a pair (both by Barber).

Fournette continues to build his case here as well. Only Gurley and Bell managed more top-13 level weeks, and only those 2 delivered such production in a higher percentage of outings.

Top 24 (11.5+ points)

As I mentioned above, the scoring gaps got smaller as we moved down the rankings. This level made sense for the last spot because of a slightly larger difference (between 24th and 25th) than the surrounding spots and the tidiness of fitting 2 starting RB spots in 12-team leagues.

1T. Todd Gurley, Rams -- 14 of 15 weeks -- 93.3%

The Saints, of course, led the way in total top-24 level RB PPR weeks, but the Patriots leaped to 2nd in this category. They didn’t give us many big scoring outings from the position, but 4 backs combined to give us 20 starter-level weeks -- 3 more than the Chargers and Jaguars tallied in tying for 3rd. That’s why grabbing pieces of the New England backfield at solid draft prices makes plenty of sense in best-ball formats right now.
