DFS Showdown Tips: Titans-Broncos

By Matt Schauf 5:09pm EDT 9/14/20

This year’s back end of the Monday night doubleheader lost a little luster when Courtland Sutton suffered a shoulder injury in practice.

But we still get last year’s surprise playoff disruptor -- the Titans -- featuring their monster of a RB, a star WR off a breakout rookie campaign and whatever we can expect from Ryan Tannehill’s encore.

The Broncos, meanwhile, lost stud edge player Von Miller to an ankle injury, let their top cover guy leave for a division rival and shook up their ILBs late in camp. They sport some intriguing young speed on offense, though, plus new lead (?) RB Melvin Gordon.

Let’s look at the values for this Showdown …

Hamler presents an interesting illustration here of the huge difference in pricing between DraftKings and FanDuel. The rookie checks in at minimum price on DK and near-minimum on FD ($5,500 vs. $5,000). But he sits at the top of the value chart for DK, and nearly bottom on FD.

Hamler looks like a terrible fantasy bet in general: a speedy rookie heading into his first NFL game with a hamstring injury that has him questionable. But if Hamler plays, he’s clearly a “why not” option at just $200 in a DK showdown. Even at our tiny projection of 3.1 PPR points, he’d deliver phenomenal value. So he’ll be one to watch when the inactives come out.

Sutton finds himself in a similar boat, with a shoulder injury rendering him questionable. It sounds like the Broncos are more optimistic about his chances than the rookie’s, but Sutton would take a much larger investment. Spend $9K on a guy who leaves early or plays limited snaps, and you’re probably in rough shape.

There’s value in the athletically gifted TEs from each team in this matchup. Smith and Fant each sit among the top 8 values in our chart, according to our projections.

Smith and Fant play even more prominently in the half-PPR scoring of FanDuel. You can’t quite get both into a lineup with Derrick Henry and the 2 QBs, though. Tim Patrick can help you there, if you’re looking to play those 3.

Of course, there are also some pretty gifted WRs on each side. Sutton’s likely absence adds target upside to Jeudy, who faces unscary matchups in the Tennessee secondary. Just today, the Titans placed top CB Adoree’ Jackson on IR (likely short-term) with a knee injury.

On the other side, Brown faces a backfield that lost CB Chris Harris in free agency. Among Denver’s new top 3 at corner, Pro Football Focus graded 2 poorly in coverage last season, and the other -- Bryce Callahan -- missed the year with a foot injury.
