Week 14 Free Agent Focus

By DS Staff 10:12pm EST 12/4/16

Andy Dalton, QB, Bengals

Blind-bid recommendation: 20-25%

Dalton proved capable of producing even without WR A.J. Green on Sunday, beating the Eagles for 332 yards and 2 TDs.

He has a much better matchup in Week 14 against the Browns’ 30th-ranked QB defense. Cleveland has allowed multiple passing scores in 10 of 12 games, including to Dalton back in Week 7.

A Week 15 visit by Pittsburgh looks less promising, though potentially OK. A Week 16 trip to Houston, though, looks like a game to certainly avoid.

Malcolm Mitchell, WR, Patriots

Blind-bid recommendation: 50-60%

Mitchell didn’t score in Sunday’s win over the Rams, but it might have been his most encouraging outing yet.

His 10 targets, 8 catches and 82 yards all ranked 2nd on the team behind only Julian Edelman. Mitchell’s role is growing on a weekly basis.

The situation helps Mitchell to look better in spite of matchups, but weeks 14 and 16 look like spots that could further favor the pass. The Ravens and Jets – visiting Foxboro in both cases – figure to make rushing tough. A Week 15 trip to Denver, on the other hand, doesn’t look good for using this rookie wideout.

Mitchell remains available in 82% of ESPN leagues.

Pierre Garcon, WR, Redskins

Blind-bid recommendation: 30-35%

Garcon led his squad with 9 targets, 7 catches and 78 yards in Sunday’s game vs. the Cardinals. That’s his 6th outing of the season with 6+ catches and his 10th with 4+.

Garcon will be on the WR3 radar for a Week 14 meeting with the Eagles’ 25th-ranked WR defense. Then comes Carolina’s 26th-ranked unit.

Garcon is still available in 56% of ESPN leagues.

Brandon LaFell, WR, Bengals

Blind-bid recommendation: 30-35%

LaFell snagged 5 balls for 95 yards and a TD in Sunday’s win over the Eagles. That included a 44-yarder and the score from just 8 yards out.

Cincinnati now heads to Cleveland for an even better matchup in Week 14. He’s a better option than Garcon in non-PPR formats, though we’d favor Garcon easily in PPR for his safer reception floor.

Tyler Boyd, WR, Bengals

Blind-bid recommendation: 20-25%

Boyd didn’t do anything special against Philly on Sunday. But the 4-66 receiving line gave him 3 straight games and 4 among his past 5 outings with at least 4 receptions and 50 yards.

That’s a decent base for PPR owners heading into a Week 14 trip to Cleveland. Matchups with Pittsburgh and Houston the following 2 weeks don’t look particularly attractive, however.

Ladarius Green, TE, Steelers

Blind-bid recommendation: 35-40%

Here’s what we wrote on Green in this week’s rankings: “Green is still playing limited snaps -- just 14 last week -- so the floor is low. But he flashed his upside on Thanksgiving with catches of 35 and 32 yards. There's some breakout potential this weekend against a Giants defense that's tougher against WRs than TEs.”

Bang! Green busted out for 6 catches on 10 targets for 110 yards and a score in Sunday’s win. We don’t have his snap count yet, but he was out there a bunch — and running a pass route on most of QB Ben Roethlisberger’s drop backs.

Green looks like a weekly fantasy starter the rest of the way.

Cameron Brate, TE, Buccaneers

Blind-bid recommendation: 20-30%

He led the Bucs with 9 targets, 6 catches, 86 yards and 1 TD in Sunday’s win. Brate has now scored in 4 of his last 6 and caught 4+ balls in 4 of his last 5.

Next up is a pristine matchup against the Saints’ 21st-ranked TE defense, which he’ll face again in Week 16. In between comes a Dallas D that has struggled in TE coverage all year.

Steelers D/ST

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-15%

Despite losing DE Cameron Heyward for the season in Week 10, Pittsburgh’s D has turned it on over the past 3 games.

The Steelers have held 3 straight opponents to 14 points or fewer, including Sunday’s win over the Giants. They have also snared 5 INTs over that stretch after totaling just 4 through the first 9 games. Overall, Pittsburgh has posted its 3 best team-D scores of the season over the past 3 contests.

The next 3 weeks bring more upside matchups: at Buffalo, at Cincinnati and vs. Baltimore.

Washington D/ST

Blind-bid recommendation: 8-10%

Washington didn’t deliver on a positive team-D matchup with Arizona on Sunday, but the Cards still sport enough offensive talent to make trouble for a mediocre defense—even if they’re underperforming.

Washington is undeniably mediocre on D, but that’s more than what the Eagles can claim to be on offense. Pending the Monday-night numbers for Week 13, the Bengals on Sunday became the 9th of Philly’s 12 opponents to score among the top 12 team defenses for the week.

This unit certainly has a chance to crack the top 12 in our Week 14 rankings.

Deep League Options:

Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens

Blind-bid recommendation: 15-20%

He came out of nowhere to tally 381 yards and 4 TDs in Sunday’s win over Miami. It was just his 3rd game of the season with more than 300 yards and his 3rd with more than 1 TD.

We’re not ready to trust Flacco in fantasy lineups yet. But a Week 14 matchup with the Patriots at least makes him an intriguing 2-QB league and “superflex” play. He might crack starter territory in our Week 14 rankings for 1-QB leagues of 14+ teams.

New England entered this week ranked 22nd in fantasy points allowed to QBs.

Zach Zenner, RB, Lions

Blind-bid recommendation: 15-20%

When Dwayne Washington went down with an ankle injury, Detroit turned to Zenner — not Theo Riddick — as the lead back. He carried 9 times for 40 yards, while Riddick took 4 totes for just 2 yards.

Washington’s absence next week would put Zenner on the RB3 radar in a good spot at home for the Bears.

Taylor Gabriel, WR, Falcons

Blind-bid recommendation: 15-20%

He didn’t have a big day (44 scoreless yards), but he saw a season-high 6 targets. That follows 3 straight 5-target outings. That type of volume raises the floor a bit for a guy who has flashed an intriguing ceiling.
