Week 2 Free Agent Focus

By DS Staff 7:15am EDT 9/13/22

Jeff Wilson Jr., RB, 49ers

Blind-bid recommendation: 20-30%

Elijah Mitchell is set to miss the next 2 months. That makes him cuttable in leagues that don’t let you stash the RB in an IR slot.

Wilson was the next RB in for Sunday’s loss to the Bears. He managed just 22 rushing yards on his 9 carries, but that workload is about to grow. Third-round rookie Tyrion Davis-Price was a healthy scratch for the opener (like Trey Sermon a year ago). RB Jordan Mason was active but didn’t play.

Even if both youngsters remain lightly – or not – involved, Wilson will cede carries to Deebo Samuel. The star wideout claimed 8 of those in Chicago and scored the team’s only TD.

But Wilson has 10 games of 12+ carries behind him with the 49ers, who have kept him around since 2018. We need only look back to the 2nd half of last season for a pair of 19+ carry games for Wilson.

We’ll likely remain conservative with Wilson in our Week 2 rankings, but he should be rostered in all leagues of 12+ teams this week – and many 10-teamers as well.

Mason and Davis-Price are worth stashing in deeper leagues where available as well.

Jaylen Warren, RB, Steelers

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-20%

Najee Harris left Sunday’s opener after rolling his ankle. Warren took over the backfield at that point, with no other RB even playing a snap.

Harris’ ankle is expected to be ready for the Week 2 clash with New England, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. If that’s not the case, though, Warren would be in line to run the backfield for an offense that would prefer fewer Mitchell Trubisky pass attempts.

Moreover, Harris has already dealt with a Lisfranc injury and this ankle tweak, and he’s just 1 game into the season. Harris’ heavy workload subjects him to a lot of hits and injury risk. Even though he checks in fairly low in risk among RBs by our Injury Guide algorithm, it’s still more likely that Harris misses at least some time this season.

With the ankle already adding early risk, get Warren stashed this week. He becomes more of a priority the greater your RB need is.

Jamaal Williams, RB, Lions

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-20%

D’Andre Swift led the backfield in carries (15), targets (3) and production, but Williams still found 11 rushing attempts and 2 targets of his own in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles.

More importantly, he got plenty of work near the goal line: 5 carries inside the 10-yard line, vs. just 1 for Swift. That included both Lions carries inside the 5, which Williams turned into 2 of the team’s 3 rushing scores.

We’re not expecting Williams to be a weekly starter, but he’s a Swift injury away from being a good bet for starter-level touches. And the running game looked good overall against Philly.

In deeper leagues – or on RB-needy rosters – Williams can be played in a pinch even with Swift healthy.

Khalil Herbert, RB, Bears

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-15%

Herbert got pretty well involved in the win over the 49ers, taking 9 carries for 45 yards and a score. RB David Montgomery mustered just 26 scoreless yards on 17 carries, though he clearly still operated as the lead back.

Montgomery played 65.5% of Bears snaps, compared with 29.3% for Herbert. He also ran 4 times as many pass routes (16-4).

The rain-soaked conditions of Soldier Field make it tough to know just how much to judge various aspects of the opener. If Montgomery doesn’t get more efficient, though, it’s not difficult to envision playing time and touches shifting Herbert’s way a little more.

Rex Burkhead, RB, Texans

Blind-bid recommendation: 5-15%

So much for the coronation of Dameon Pierce. Burkhead out-carried the rookie 14-11 and out-targeted him 8-1.

It’s an especially concerning split for Pierce, as the Texans figure to play from behind in plenty of games this season.

“Sometimes, though, when you look back, you can’t defend the amount of reps our starting tailback got in some of those situations,” HC Lovie Smith said Monday. “I wish he had gotten more, and we’re going to work to get him more of those opportunities.”

Keep that in mind as a limit on Burkhead’s outlook. It certainly sounds like Smith wants to get Pierce more involved. Burkhead’s huge edge in the passing game, though – 27-5 lead in Week 1 routes – could make him worth a look for spot starts in PPR leagues.

Zack Moss, RB, Bills

Blind-bid recommendation: 5-10%

After creating some buzz in August, Moss was a significant part of the offense in Thursday night’s opener. He played 38% of the snaps, carried 6 times and led Bills RBs with 6 targets and 6 catches.

Moss totaled just 36 yards and lost a fumble, so we’ll see where his role goes from there. But he’s worth rostering in fantasy leagues of 12+ teams.

Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson, WRs, Commanders

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-20%

Finally back healthy, Samuel’s ankle-breaking ways returned in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville. Not only that, but the former Panther actually led the team in targets (11) and catches (8).

He found the end zone on a speed out at the goal line. And he even factored into the run game with 4 attempts for 17 yards. The volatility of Carson Wentz figures to make Samuel inconsistent from week to week. But even a small rushing role helps in the short term — as long as Brian Robinson remains out. Plus, we know Samuel’s never been short on talent; it’s all about dodging another injury.

Dotson popped off for 3 catches, 40 yards and 2 TDs against Jacksonville. The rookie saw only 5 targets — a 12.1% share — but made them count alongside a surprisingly effective Carson Wentz. Encouragingly, Dotson ran a route on 90% of Wentz’s drop-backs — not far behind Terry McLaurin’s 94%.

Dotson, a Round 1 pick, has the talent to stick as a useful fantasy option in the right matchups. Remember, he generated plenty of buzz this summer. And you can't ask for a much better matchup than the one he'll get next Sunday at Detroit.

Robbie Anderson, WR, Panthers

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-15%

After an ugly 2021, Anderson opened the 2022 campaign with a 5-102-1 line. The majority of that production came on a 75-yard score in the 4th quarter. But Anderson notably led Carolina with 8 targets – 29.6% of the team total.

Don’t expect that level of volume to continue, but there’s no reason Anderson can’t be a clear top 3 option in this passing game and spot start option in fantasy. Second-year Round 2 pick Terrace Marshall didn’t play a single snap in the opener, while recent trade addition Laviska Shenault was a healthy scratch.

Zay Jones and Marvin Jones, WRs, Jaguars

Blind-bid recommendation: 5-10%

We expected these players to be utilized in Week 1, but we did not expect both to be on the field for every passing play. And that’s essentially what happened.

The Jaguars apparently want to run 11 personnel a whole lot this season, and since this is still a team that should trail a lot, that could mean both Zay and Marvin have significant value – particularly if we see a big jump from Trevor Lawrence. In Week 1, Zay saw 9 targets and caught 6 for 65 yards; Marvin garnered 6 targets and went 4-38. Christian Kirk is clearly the No. 1 option (6-117 on 12 targets), but both of these players can be productive when game scripts remain favorable.

Sterling Shepard, WR, Giants

Blind-bid recommendation: 5-8%

Shepard finished just 3rd on the team with 4 targets in Sunday’s win over the Titans, trailing Saquon Barkley and Richie James. But that he played at all coming off a December Achilles’ tear was impressive.

Moreover, the 1st of his 2 catches produced a 65-yard TD.

It’s easy to envision Shepard’s role growing as the season progresses – especially with Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney near-silent at Tennessee and Wan’Dale Robinson hurting a knee. Plus, Shepard’s track record is clear, with 3 career seasons of 65+ receptions.

Tyler Higbee, TE, Rams

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-15%

He didn’t do much in the box score on Thursday night, catching 5 balls for 39 scoreless yards. But Higbee’s usage was awesome. He ran a route on 92% of the Rams’ pass plays and drew 11 targets (27% share).

Of course, the Rams will try to get Allen Robinson going following a non-existent opener. And Van Jefferson should return from a knee injury within the next few games.

If Higbee gets anything close to his Week 1 usage going forward, though, he’ll be a good bet for a top-12 fantasy season.

Gerald Everett, TE, Chargers

Blind-bid recommendation: 10-15%

Everett delivered in the opener with 3 catches, 54 yards and 1 score vs. Vegas. He saw only 4 targets, despite the 2nd quarter departure of Keenan Allen (hamstring) and an inactive Donald Parham (hamstring).

Everett ran a route on 68% of Justin Herbert’s dropbacks, a decent-but-not-spectacular number. Second-year TE Tre’ McKitty played only 4 fewer snaps than Everett and matched the veteran in targets.

We can’t get too picky at TE, though. And we’re still talking about a Justin Herbert-led offense. With Allen and Parham likely out for a Thursday showdown at Kansas City, Everett will be back in the TE1 mix. Longer-term, Everett has the talent (and contract, with $8 million guaranteed) to say he’ll deliver as a strong spot-starter.
