Rough performances for last week’s selections, but at least I was consistent. No. 20 rankings at all 3 spots is not gonna get it done, so let’s jump right into improving on it ...
QB: Jared Goff, Rams
I like the spot for Bills QB Tyrod Taylor at home against the Bucs and coming off a bye this week, especially with WR Jordan Matthews looking likely to return from his thumb fracture. But Taylor is already owned in 47.5% of ESPN leagues, which is too high to qualify for this spot (according to my self-imposed rules). So I’ll go with the other guy I was weighing against Taylor.
The Cardinals have gone from scary pass D to scared of when you throw at anyone other than Patrick Peterson. If Peterson’s ready to return Sunday from the quad injury that knocked him out of last week’s game, we can bet on him mostly taking away Sammy Watkins in Week 7.
But that would still leave Goff with the 3 guys who have drawn more targets than Watkins so far this year and the TE tied with him. WRs Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods draw positive coverage matchups. Todd Gurley figures to have more luck in the passing game than on the ground. Football Outsiders rates Arizona 24th against the pass this season, 4th against the run.
Throw in the threat of a Cardinals offense that delivered season highs in yards and points in its 1st game after the Adrian Peterson trade, and we should get better than usual pass volume from Goff.
The Rams QB has only reached 30 attempts twice through 6 games. Goff didn’t deliver much in the way of fantasy points against tough Seattle and Jacksonville defenses the past 2 weeks. But he topped 250 yards and tossed 2+ TDs in each of the previous 2 games.
