Sammie Coates Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (shoulder) is inactive for today’s game against the Bengals. It’s another opportunity for WR Sammie Coates, although we wouldn’t use him in fantasy. WR Eli Rogers and TE Jesse James are the best bets to finish 2nd and 3rd on the team in targets this week.

Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (shoulder) has been ruled out for Monday night's game against the Redskins. That opens up a big opportunity for WR Sammie Coates, who should see lots of snaps on the outside. Coates shouldn't be in Week 1 fantasy lineups but is worth keeping a close eye on.

Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (shoulder) missed practice on Friday. He’s yet to practice this week. Beat writer David Todd considers him “unlikely” to play vs. Washington, a game that kicks off on Monday night. His absence would give Sammie Coates an opportunity to run with the #2 WR role. Slot WR Eli Rogers and TE Jesse James would also receive a target boost.

Steelers WR Sammie Coates caught both his targets for 66 yards and a score in Friday night's preseason game. But both grabs came with QB Landry Jones and the 2nd-team offense. We didn't see Coates take a single snap with the starters. It looks like Pittsburgh will open the season with Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton outside and Eli Rogers in the slot. That obviously makes Coates hands-off in fantasy lineups. He's still capable of earning a starting job at some point this year, but he can't be drafted as more than a late-round flier.

Steelers WR Eli Rogers has been getting 1st-team slot WR reps in training camp. “We’ll see when we get to the games,” OC Todd Haley said, “but everything we’ve seen to this point, we haven’t had a slot guy like him since I’ve been here. It hasn’t been close.” Haley compared Rogers to former Jet Wayne Chrebet for his hands, quickness and ability to make guys miss after the catch. Rogers is the same size as Chrebet: 5'10 and 187 pounds. We'll see if he plays with the starters in the preseason. Rogers winning the slot job would leave just 1 starting spot between Markus Wheaton and Sammie Coates.

Steelers OC Todd Haley talked up WR Sammie Coates to Yahoo's Charles Robinson, calling him a "night and day" player between last season and now. The positive buzz on Coates has been steady all season. There was never any doubting the upside on a 6'1, 212-pounder with 4.4 speed and a 41-inch vertical. And it sounds like Coates' game is catching up to that potential. If he can push Markus Wheaton aside for the #2 spot on the depth chart, Coates could quickly emerge as a weekly fantasy starter.

Steelers WR Sammie Coates is in much better shape now than he was during his rookie season. “I worked my butt off to get where I am today,” he said. “It started in the offseason when we first got done. I worked every day. When we got a little break before camp I worked out three times a day." Coates looks "noticeably slimmer" this summer, according to insider Ray Fittipaldo, and has been one of the "early standouts" of training camp. The 2nd-year WR with an elite combination of size and athleticism has breakout potential. We'll see if he can beat out Markus Wheaton for the #2 gig.

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert brought up WR Sammie Coates when asked how the team will make up for the loss of WR Martavis Bryant this season.  “We feel good about Sammie Coates," Colbert said.  Last year's 3rd-rounder finished the regular season with just 1 catch for 11 yards but made 2 grabs for 61 yards in Pittsburgh's playoff loss to Denver.  Raw but supremely athletic, Coates is a candidate to take a significant 2nd-year leap.  He'll head to training camp battling Darrius Heyward-Bey for the #3 WR job.

Per team insider Dejan Kovacevic, Steelers WR Martavis Bryant received a full-season suspension for again violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bryant’s agent confirmed the news. With the 24-year-old out of action, Pittsburgh will lean more on Markus Wheaton, Sammie Coates and newcomer Ladarius Green. It sounds like the Steelers will keep Bryant on the team, but he will not be eligible to play or practice until he's reinstated by the NFL.

The Steelers and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey have agreed to a new 3-year, $3.8 million deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.  DHB saw just 39 targets this past season, hauling in 21 of them for 314 yards and 2 scores.  He'll remain no higher than 4th on the depth chart in 2016.  Note, though, that WR Markus Wheaton will be a free agent in 2017.  That could leave Heyward-Bey and Sammie Coates to battle for the #3 job.

Steelers WR Darrius Heyward-Bey is slated to step into the #3 WR job during Martavis Bryant's 4-game suspension, according to insider Ed Bouchette.  Raw rookie Sammie Coates isn't ready for a significant role yet, so Pittsburgh is forced to go with DHB.  The Steelers run a lot of 3-WR sets, so Heyward-Bey will see plenty of playing time.  But it'd be impossible to trust him in fantasy lineups.  He caught 3 of 5 targets, averaged 11 yards per catch and committed 1 drop last year.

The Steelers plucked WR Sammie Coates in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFL Draft.  There's no doubting this guy's physical profile.  Coates goes 6'1, 212 pounds with 4.4 speed and a 41-inch vertical.  He can certainly get downfield, averaging over 20 yards per catch in the SEC.  But Coates' route running, ball tracking and hands all need work.  He's a developmental prospect who won't be higher than 4th on Pittsburgh's depth chart this season.
