D.J. Foster Fantasy Football News 2018

Cardinals RB David Johnson will undergo surgery on his dislocated wrist this week and is expected to be sidelined 2-3 months, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Johnson will be placed on IR but has a chance to be tabbed the "designated-to-return" player. Still, we're looking at a mid-November return -- or somewhere around Week 10 or 11 -- as the best-case scenario. He'll be tough to carry on fantasy rosters unless your league has an IR spot or deep benches. With Johnson sidelined, Arizona will turn to a committee backfield of Kerwynn Williams, Andre Ellington and possibly Elijhaa Penny, D.J. Foster and/or a free-agent addition. Williams is the best fantasy bet, but we're treating him only as a RB3 or flex at this point. Ellington has a shot to be an asset in PPR leagues.

The Cardinals have plucked RB D.J. Foster from the Patriots' practice squad. He went undrafted last year and totaled just 8 touches as a rookie. The Arizona State product goes 6'0, 195 pounds and played some RB and WR over a 4-year college career that featured 444 carries and 222 catches. We'll keep an eye on Foster, but he's not yet worth owning in fantasy football. His addition is a sign, though, that the Cardinals won't lean too heavily on any 1 back in David Johnson's absence.

Patriots RB D.J. Foster is a healthy scratch for tonight's game against the Cardinals. There was some concern that he'd steal passing-down work from RB James White after a big showing in the preseason finale. White is now a much safer fantasy play.

The Patriots released RB Tyler Gaffney. It’s a minor surprise, but the move means LeGarrette Blount remains New England’s “big back.” Receiving RB DJ Foster is expected to stick as a reserve.

Patriots RB D.J. Foster hauled in 9 of 10 targets for 110 yards in Thursday night's preseason finale. His 9 carries totaled just 22 yards. That pass-catching work is what's important, though, for an offense looking to replace RB Dion Lewis. Four of Foster's catches came from QB Tom Brady in 1 half of action. ESPN's Mike Reiss reported before the game that Foster and Tyler Gaffney could be fighting for 1 roster spot. Gaffney took 6 carries for 22 yards and wasn't targeted in Thursday's game. We'll see which guys sticks on the roster on Saturday.
