Cowboys starting FS Xavier Woods suffered a hamstring strain in Saturday's exhibition game against the Bengals and might miss the regular-season opener. According to The Athletic, Woods is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. Dallas' opener sits 3 weeks and 1 day from the date of his injury. The Cowboys have gone through camp extremely thin at safety, listing Woods and fellow starter Jeff Heath as each other's backups. Fortunately for them, the free-agent market still holds plenty of former starters at the position -- including George Iloka, whom Cincinnati released Sunday. ESPN's Todd Archer says the Cowboys are considering Iloka, among others. Dallas, of course, has also been linked to disgruntled Seahawks FS Earl Thomas all offseason. We'll see where this goes and when Woods makes it back to the field.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Bengals are cutting S George Iloka. The veteran has started 76 games over 6 seasons with the team. He even started next to Shawn Williams in Saturday night's 2nd preseason game. Rookie Jessie Bates sits behind Iloka on the "unofficial" depth chart. We'll see what the succession plan is over the week ahead.
Bengals S George Iloka initially drew a 1-game suspension from the NFL for a shot to the head of Steelers WR Antonio Brown in Monday night's loss. But the league overturned its ruling on appeal and changed the punishment to a fine. Iloka hasn't been much of an IDP factor, but his presence will help a Cincinnati defense ravaged by injuries. Six starters missed practice Wednesday, including SS Shawn Williams and the top 3 CBs.
Bengals safeties Reggie Nelson (groin) and George Iloka (ankle) are both active for today's matchup with the Chargers. Neither is a terrific IDP option, but Nelson will make sense for plenty of fantasy football owners.
Bengals rookie S Shawn Williams sits behind George Iloka on the depth chart but impressed with his work Saturday night. While Iloka sat out with a wrist injury, Williams tallied 10 tackles, double what anyone else on the team produced. Williams rotated in with Taylor Mays -- who started -- early, but took nearly all the snaps from the mid-1st quarter on. The team website reports that Williams has also impressed in practice recently, including INTs on consecutive days. Iloka will reportedly return soon with some sort of brace on his wrist. Don't be surprised if Williams pushes him for the job next to Reggie Nelson, though. If Williams gets into the lineup, he'll carry intriguing IDP upside.
