The Raiders on Saturday placed S Karl Joseph on IR with the right foot injury he suffered at the end of Thursday night's win over the Chargers. The team signed S D.J. Swearinger to fill his roster spot. We'll see about Swearinger's playing time in a fluid Oakland secondary. The team also signed DE Dion Jordan over the weekend. A one-time top-5 pick in the NFL Draft, Jordan has busted hard through stints with the Dolphins and Seahawks. We'll see if he can get anything together in Oakland, but Jordan's not likely to become an IDP factor.
Raiders S Karl Joseph (groin) is doubtful for today's game against the Bills. HC Jack Del Rio intimated Friday that rookie Shalom Luani is likely to start in Joseph's place. IDP owners should look elsewhere for a Week 8 fill-in.
Raiders LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers. He put in limited practices all week. We'll check on his status Sunday. Oakland has already ruled out S Karl Joseph (toe).
Raiders S Karl Joseph left in the 2nd quarter of Sunday's win over the Bills with a left big toe injury. S Nate Allen filled in the rest of the way. Joseph didn't open the game on the field, however -- with Reggie Nelson the lone true safety, alongside CBs David Amerson, Sean Smith and T.J. Carrie. That followed a 76.9% snap share for Joseph in Week 12, his smallest since entering the lineup. Combine that with the toe injury, and it's tough to trust Joseph over the next 3 weeks. You can stash him on your bench in a deeper IDP league, but feel free to move on to another DB in average-sized redraft leagues.
The Raiders will replace 2 defensive starters after allowing 1,035 yards over the 1st 2 games. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that rookie S Karl Joseph will replace Keith McGill, starting next to veteran S Reggie Nelson. Rookie LB Cory James will also replace ILB Ben Heeney, who appeared to struggle in pass D against the Falcons. If you had claimed McGill or Heeney in your IDP league, feel free to go ahead and drop him for another option. We'll see about the IDP prospects of the new starters. Joseph looked like a playmaker in college before an ACL tear ended his 2015 season. James earned praise for his play in coverage over the summer.
The Raiders' latest depth chart lists 1st-round pick S Karl Joseph #2 at SS behind veteran Nate Allen. That doesn't necessarily mean he has let his new team down but rather that he's still developing -- especially after losing most of his senior year to an ACL tear and missing the offseason. Expect Joseph to replace Allen at some point this year. Neither should be on your IDP radar heading into the season, though.
The Raiders selected S Karl Joseph 14th overall in the NFL Draft. He'll start right away at the back of a defense that could still use some work. Joseph drew praise for his hard hitting in scouting reports but grabbed just 9 INTs over his 4 college seasons. He did at least finish with 5 in 2015.
