Panthers HC Ron Rivera said Monday that QB Kyle Allen will start this weekend's game against the 49ers. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last week that QB Cam Newton (foot) would be ready to practice after the bye, but Rivera said he'll continue to rehab this week. How Allen fares vs. a stingy 'Niners defense on Sunday might impact whether Newton is "ready" to return for Week 9.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) is expected to be ready to practice after the Week 7 bye. Carolina has gone 4-0 under QB Kyle Allen, although his play has been uneven. We'll see if Newton is ready to return for Week 8 against the 49ers -- and then if the Panthers go back to him.
Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) won't travel with the team to London and is out for Sunday's game against the Bucs, HC Ron Rivera said Tuesday. Newton is reportedly out of his walking boot, so a Week 8 return (after a Week 7 bye) seems possible. QB Kyle Allen gets another start this weekend and is a viable starter vs. Tampa's 27th-ranked QB defense.
The Athletic's Joseph Person hears that Panthers QB Cam Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc injury. That's much more significant than just a sprained foot. Person notes that the timetable for return for Lisfranc injuries tends to be in the 4-8 week range. The Panthers have a Week 7 bye, so we're now expecting Newton to be sidelined until at least Week 8. We'll continue to keep a close eye on him, but he's droppable in shallower fantasy leagues.
The Panthers have ruled QB Cam Newton (foot) out for Sunday's game against the Texans. "We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return,” HC Ron Rivera said. It's a smart move by Carolina, especially after QB Kyle Allen's impressive Week 3 outing. Allen will be a deep-league spot-start option vs. Houston this week.
Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) has been ruled out for Week 3. He was still in a walking boot on Thursday, so he might be looking at a multi-game absence here. QB Kyle Allen starts this weekend's game against the Cardinals. He played well in last year's finale but struggled to a 52.9% completion rate and 4.9 yards per attempt this preseason. Allen is just a low-end QB2 for Week 3 -- but he's worth considering at minimum price on DraftKings.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believes it's "trending" toward Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) missing this weekend's game against the Cardinals and QB Kyle Allen getting the start. Newton remains in a walking boot and didn't practice on Wednesday. Fantasy owners shouldn't plan on having him in Week 3 lineups. Allen started last year's season finale against a Saints team with nothing to play for, completing 16 of 27 passes (59.3%) for 228 yards (8.4 YPA), 2 TDs and 0 INTs. He posted an ugly 52.9% completion rate and 4.9 yards per attempt this preseason, although it was enough to beat out rookie Will Grier for the backup job. Allen went undrafted last year after a rocky college career. He was the #1 QB recruit in the country in the 2014 class and actually played alongside Kyler Murray at Texas A&M in 2015. Allen then transferred to Houston, opened the 2017 campaign as the starter but was benched just 3 games in. He's an intriguing player but is just a low-end QB2 for Week 3.
Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) did not practice on Wednesday. He's reportedly still in a walking boot after re-injuring his foot last Thursday night. Consider Newton no better than 50/50 to play against the Cardinals this weekend. QB Kyle Allen will draw the start if Newton is out.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Panthers QB Cam Newton aggravated his foot injury in Thursday night's loss to the Bucs and that his status for Week 3 is "up in the air." We'll keep tabs on Newton throughout the week, but he shouldn't be in your Week 3 fantasy plans. On top of struggling as a passer, Newton isn't running. He has 5 carries for negative 2 yards through 2 games -- and the foot injury is likely to blame. QB Kyle Allen will start for Carolina against the Cardinals on Sunday if Newton can't.
