Rico Gathers Fantasy Football News 2019

Police arrested Cowboys TE Rico Gathers late Friday night on marijuana possession charges, according to the Dallas Morning News. That's particularly unfortunate timing, given today's deadline for cutting rosters down to 53 for the regular season. We'll see if the situation impacts Gathers' status there, and then whether it draws any further league action.

According to Calvin Watkins of The Athletic, the Cowboys have been splitting 1st-team TE reps evenly among Blake Jarwin, Dalton Schultz and Geoff Swaim. That, of course, makes it difficult for fantasy drafters to decide which -- if any -- to consider in the late rounds of best-ball drafts. Rico Gathers remains in the picture as well but doesn't really seem to be in the starting mix. We'd avoid the whole situation in current redraft formats and wait for a starter to emerge in the preseason.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is making strides this offseason but still has lots of work to do, HC Jason Garrett said Wednesday. "He's done a really good job improving over the course of his time here, he's a different player now than he was a couple years ago," Garrett said. "He just needs to play more football." Gathers missed the entire 2017 season after sustaining a concussion in August. He wasn't cleared until Week 7 and was too far behind at that point to contribute. Gathers didn't appear in a regular season game as a rookie in 2016, either, after focusing exclusively on basketball in high school and college. So he hasn't played in a meaningful football game since junior high. It's no surprise, then, that he needs work. There's upside in Gathers' 6'6, 285-pound frame and opportunity in Dallas with Jason Witten gone. But Gathers shouldn't be viewed as more than a late-round flier in early best-ball drafts.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Cowboys TE Jason Witten plans to retire and join the Monday Night Football broadcast team, though he'll meet with Jerry Jones before making it official. Assuming he does finalize that decision, Witten would join Dez Bryant in removing about 45% of targets from last year's Dallas offense. Witten's share slipped to 17.7%, while his 8.9 yards per catch marked a career low. With TE James Hanna also retiring, Rico Gathers could face big opportunity in his 2nd season. We'll see whether the Cowboys add pass-catchers -- either at TE or WR -- in the next 2 rounds of the NFL Draft on Friday.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers sustained a concussion in Tuesday's practice, according to NFL Network's James Palmer. Gathers has been building momentum with a couple of strong preseason outings, but he was still a long shot to make a 2017 fantasy impact. This concussion obviously won't help. We'll see how long it takes him to pass through the protocol.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers hauled in 4 balls for 47 yards and a score in Saturday night's preseason game against the Rams. That followed a 3-59-1 line in the Hall of Fame Game. Gathers is a monstrous 6'6, 290-pound converted basketball player who's looked impressively smooth in these exhibition outings. He's stuck behind TE Jason Witten for now and isn't worth a roster spot in redraft leagues. But Gathers is an intriguing stash in keeper and dynasty formats.
