The Chargers have named Brandon Staley their new HC. The 38-year-old has been a fast riser, going from a LBs coach in Chicago and Denver to Rams defensive coordinator to Chargers HC in just 5 years. Staley's 2020 Rams defense was better than Wade Phillips' 2019 unit in points allowed, total yards allowed, yards per play allowed and Football Outsiders' DVOA. This at least looks like a good hire for the Chargers defense. We'll see who joins Staley to run the offense.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes sustained a concussion in the 3rd quarter of Sunday's Divisional Round win over the Browns. It's his 2nd documented concussion, with the 1st coming at Texas Tech back in 2014. Mahomes' progress through the protocol this coming week will be the biggest story in sports. If he's not cleared by Sunday, QB Chad Henne will get the start in the AFC Championship vs. the Bills.
Bucs RB Ronald Jones (quad, finger) is active for tonight's game against the Saints. HC Bruce Arians said earlier this week that RB Leonard Fournette would get the start regardless of Jones' status, making Fournette the better fantasy bet.
Saints QB Taysom Hill (knee) and RB Latavius Murray (quad) are inactive for tonight's game vs. the Bucs. QB Drew Brees and RB Alvin Kamara will pick up extra snaps.
Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle, hip) is officially inactive for today's matchup with Cleveland. As expected. Should the Chiefs advance, we'd expect CEH to return for the AFC Championship game.
Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle, hip) "has an uphill battle to play" against the Browns today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The rookie missed practice on Thursday and Friday after being limited on Wednesday. If he's inactive, Kansas City will roll with RBs Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams. With Edwards-Helaire out for Week 16, Williams out-carried Bell 10 to 7 and out-targeted him 6 to 3.
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson sustained a concussion at the end of the 3rd quarter of Saturday night's loss to the Bills. He struggled before the injury, throwing for just 162 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT and being limited to 34 yards on 9 carries. This is the 1st documented concussion for Jackson.
Bucs RB Ronald Jones (quad, finger) has "a good shot to play" vs. the Saints today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Jones participated in Saturday's walkthrough, although a final decision on his availability won't come until he gets to the stadium today. We'll find out whether Jones is active around 5 pm ET. HC Bruce Arians said earlier this week that RB Leonard Fournette will get the start regardless of Jones' status.
Saints WR Tre'Quan Smith (ankle) has been activated from IR. So he'll return for Sunday's game against the Bucs after missing the last 3. Smith figures to re-join Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders in 3-WR sets and has some appeal as a cheap DFS play.
The Saints are "not likely" to have RB Latavius Murray (quad) or QB Taysom Hill (knee) active for today's game against the Buccaneers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Those absences would boost the touch and scoring upside for RB Alvin Kamara, as well as the scoring upside for QB Drew Brees. Hill has often replaced Brees near the goal line in recent weeks. Kamara has posted lackluster yardage totals in each meeting with Tampa this year but also scored on the ground and caught 5 passes in each game.
The Steelers have promoted QB coach Matt Canada to OC. The 48-year-old had been in that previous role for just 1 season, spending the rest of his coaching career in the college ranks. Canada had 9 different OC stints, most recently with LSU in 2017 and Maryland in 2018. Those teams ranked 76th and 69th, respectively, in points per game.
Rams WR Cooper Kupp (knee) is inactive for today's Divisional Round game vs. the Packers. It's a significant loss. WRs Josh Reynolds and Van Jefferson will take on bigger roles with Kupp out, but WR Robert Woods is a good bet to lead the way in targets.
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is making "great progress" in his recovery from October's fractured and dislocated right ankle, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He's walking and working in the pool and on an anti-gravity treadmill. Dallas believes Prescott will "come back better than ever." Those 2 sides still need to come to an agreement on a long-term deal after Dak played under the franchise tag in 2020.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo hears that there's "optimism" within the Steelers organization that QB Ben Roethlisberger will be back for the 2021 season. "Optimism" is an interesting word choice. Roethlisberger had a solid start to 2020 but averaged just 6.0 yards per attempt with 15 TDs and 10 INTs over the final 7 games, including the playoff loss to Cleveland. He turns 39 in March.
Saints QB Drew Brees is "likely" to retire after this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 42-year-old reportedly has a TV contract waiting from NBC. The Saints, meanwhile, would like to bring back QB Jameis Winston. "They love what they've seen in practice," Rapoport says. "They've seen the arm talent. They've seen all the skills that made him a #1 pick. They love the work ethic. They just haven't seen him show that he's learned mentally to cut down the INTs because he hasn't played." New Orleans also has QB Taysom Hill under contract for 2021.
The Falcons have hired Arthur Smith as HC. Smith spent the past 2 seasons as OC in Tennessee, leading the Titans to top 12 finishes in points and yards both years. He leaned heavily on RB Derrick Henry but also helped QB Ryan Tannehill to his 2 best seasons as a pro. Tannehill notably ranked 9th and 1st, respectively, in percentage of passes to come off play-action the past 2 years. Consider the hire good news for QB Matt Ryan and the Falcons passing game.
Saints QB Taysom Hill (knee) returned to a limited practice on Friday and is listed as questionable for this weekend's game vs. the Bucs. The versatile Hill's absence would be a tangible blow to New Orleans' offense -- but boost the outlooks for QB Drew Brees and RB Alvin Kamara.
Saints RB Latavius Murray (quad) is questionable for Sunday's game vs. the Bucs after returning a limited practice on Friday. He's expected to be a game-time decision. We'll look for further updates but might not know Murray's status until a little after 6 pm ET on Sunday.
Browns TE David Njoku (hamstring) got in just 1 limited practice this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. He shouldn't be in any fantasy lineups, but his absence would free up some opportunity for Cleveland's other pass-catchers. Njoku has averaged 3 targets per game over the past 5 weeks.
Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle, hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's Divisional Round game vs. the Browns. After putting in a limited practice on Wednesday, he missed the final 2 workouts of the week. "A couple of days ago he moved around real well and then we just kind of backed off him," HC Andy Reid said Friday. "He's still doing stuff, just not with the group. We'll just see how he does." We imagine Edwards-Helaire will be limited if he suits up on Sunday. RBs Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams will pick up more action.
