The Browns picked LSU LB Jacob Phillips in Round 3 of the NFL Draft. Phillips joins an LB corps that returns only Mack Wilson among 2019 starters. That presents immediate opportunity to the guy who took over play-calling duties for LSU's defense. Phillips' 113 tackles led the Tigers by 21 last season.
The Browns selected S Grant Delpit in Round 2 of the NFL Draft. The LSU alum dealt with a high-ankle sprain in 2019 and saw his performance and production slip. Delpit posted his best season as a 2018 sophomore, including 74 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 9 passes defensed and 5 INTs. Delpit defensed 7+ passes in each of his 3 seasons. Cleveland provides him the opportunity to start right away. Delpit will be worth a look in dynasty rookie drafts and could land inside the top 36 when our 2020 IDP rankings come out.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that LB Joe Schobert has agreed to a 5-year deal with the Jaguars worth $53.75 million, including $22.5 million guaranteed. That should position Schobert as the MLB starter in a Jacksonville defense with new questions in the LB corps. Does Myles Jack slide out from the middle to start on the weak side in 2020? Will Telvin Smith return from his 2019 personal-life hiatus? And if so, where will he play? We'll see about those. What we can count on is Schobert heading into 2020 with the group's strongest IDP outlook. Back in Cleveland, meanwhile, 2019 rookies Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki appear to have clear lanes to starting gigs, with Schobert and Christian Kirksey gone. We'll see if the Browns add anyone else at the position.
Browns DT Sheldon Richardson (back) and DE Olivier Vernon (knee) are active for today's season finale against the Bengals. Richardson looks good for normal IDP usage. Vernon, on the other hand, hasn't played a full game since Week 9. He previously made it through just 10 snaps in a Week 13 attempt at returning from the knee injury. He'd be a high-risk IDP option -- albeit with sack upside.
Browns DT Sheldon Richardson (back) is active for today's game against the Ravens. DE Olivier Vernon (knee) is out once again.
Browns DE Olivier Vernon (knee) is active for today's game against the Steelers. He missed the past 3 games and returns to a lackluster sack matchup. But Vernon's OK for IDP consideration. Cleveland also made the surprising move of making FS Damarious Randall a healthy scratch. Randall reportedly didn't even travel with the team. Scott Petrak of BrownsZone.com writes that "it's likely a disciplinary measure." Juston Burris and Sheldrick Redwine will likely start at safety against the Steelers. Neither is a strong IDP option.
Browns MLB Joe Schobert (groin) is active for today's game against the Dolphins. He's ready to use as you normally would in IDP lineups. Despite the "questionable" tag, we never saw any indication that Schobert was in danger of missing the game.
Browns MLB Joe Schobert is questionable for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. A groin issue popped up Thursday to limit Schobert's practice, but he returned to full participation Friday. We've seen no indication he's in danger of missing the game, but we'll check Schobert's status Sunday morning.
Browns S Morgan Burnett will miss the rest of the season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon in Thursday night's win over the Steelers. Eric Murray sits behind him on the depth chart but missed Week 11 with his own knee injury. We'll see whether Murray can return for Week 12. We'll also see about the NFL future for the 30-year-old Burnett, who has just 1 cuttable year remaining on his contract. Burnett's not worth holding in dynasty IDP leagues.
The NFL on Friday suspended Browns DE Myles Garrett "at a minimum for the remainder of the regular season and postseason." The league will also require that Garrett meet with the commissioner's office before he is reinstated. We'd bet on the NFL allowing Garrett to start the 2020 season on time. But you should obviously go ahead and dump him from any redraft IDP rosters. DE Chad Thomas should see continued playing time in Garrett's absence. He has filled in at left DE for Olivier Vernon (knee) the past 2 weeks.
Browns S Morgan Burnett left in the 2nd quarter of Thursday night's game against the Steelers with an Achilles' tendon injury and was quickly ruled out. That doesn't seem to bode well for his outlook beyond Week 11. We'll see about the official diagnosis.
The Browns on Monday waived S Jermaine Whitehead. The starter went ranting on Twitter, including threatening people in his responses following Cleveland's loss to the Broncos. His ouster leaves room for Morgan Burnett to remain in the starting lineup even ever FS Damarious Randall returns. Randall missed the past 2 games with a hamstring injury, allowing Burnett to get back into the lineup. Burnett had been playing behind Whitehead since returning from his own injury. The Browns host Buffalo in Week 10.
Browns starting CBs Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams are inactive for today's game against the Seahawks. That marks the 4th straight game both players will have missed with hamstring injuries.
Browns CBs Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams are questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks with their hamstring injuries. Both players missed the past 3 contests, but both also returned to limited practices this week. Neither should be in your IDP plans even if active.
Browns CBs Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams will miss their 3rd straight games. Both are dealing with hamstring injuries and have yet to return to practice since going down. S Morgan Burnett is returning, though. He's active after missing the past 2 contests with a quad injury.
