NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that 49ers QB Nick Mullens will need surgery on his right elbow after suffering an injury late in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys. Mullens reportedly lost feeling in the arm after having it hit on a 4th-quarter pass. C.J. Beathard will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Update: Cam Inman reports that it's Tommy John (ligament replacement) surgery for Mullens.

49ers QB Nick Mullens injured his right (throwing) shoulder in the 4th quarter of Sunday's game against the Cowboys. We'll look for an update on the severity. QB C.J. Beathard replaced Mullens and will be under center for as long as Mullens is out. QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) isn't expected to return this season.

Update: The 49ers announced Mullens with an elbow injury.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan confirmed that QB Nick Mullens will start Sunday's game against the Giants. QB Jimmy Garoppolo's status for Week 4 and beyond remains uncertain with that high-ankle sprain. Mullens played well in 8 starts back in 2018, but he's just a lower-end QB2 for Week 3.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that QB Nick Mullens "most likely" will start against the Giants this weekend. QB Jimmy Garoppolo hasn't been ruled out with his high-ankle sprain just yet, but it sounds like he'll miss at least 1 game. Mullens was solid in 8 starts back in 2018, completing 64% of his passes, averaging 8.3 yards per attempt and averaging 285 yards and 1.6 TDs per game. He's just a QB2 in fantasy but should be able to keep this offense on schedule.

49ers QB Nick Mullens will start Monday night's game against the Giants. Mullens played better than anyone could have expected in his debut last Thursday, completing 16 of 22 passes for 262 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs. His 151.9 passer rating was the best in NFL history in a QB debut with 16+ pass attempts. The outing said just as much about Oakland's defense as Mullens' ability, though. He's just a low-end QB2 for Week 10.
