Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (knee) is ready for the start of training camp, HC Andy Reid said. Ware missed the entire 2017 campaign with a torn PCL and LCL in his right knee. He was set to open last season in a committee with Kareem Hunt but obviously returns as a pure backup. We're curious to see just how much action Ware steals from Hunt this year, though. Note that Hunt's 67.2% carry share last season was the 2nd highest mark in Reid's 19 seasons as a HC.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware has been diagnosed with a torn PCL and LCL, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He'll undergo surgery and is done for the season. Multi-ligament injuries are extremely tough and lengthy rehabs. We'll track Ware's progress, but don't consider him a lock to be ready for the start of the 2018 campaign. Kareem Hunt is entrenched as Kansas City's lead back.

Chiefs Head Athletic Trainer Rick Burkholder announced that RB Spencer Ware has a torn PCL, “in addition to other damage.” He’s going for a 2nd opinion, but the injury is likely a season-ender. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport does add that Ware is hoping to land on the IR-designated-to-return list, which would allow him to come back anytime after Week 8. That sounds optimistic, though. We’ve removed Ware from the RB rankings. Kareem Hunt is obviously the big winner here. The rookie will step into the feature role in HC Andy Reid’s offense. We detailed earlier this offseason how productive that spot has been for fantasy football. RB Charcandrick West moves up to #2 on the depth chart. And RB C.J. Spiller now stands a good chance to make the squad. Check out our updated projections for the Chiefs backfield.

A source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that Chiefs RB Spencer Ware has a PCL injury and is expected to be sidelined anywhere from 2-8 weeks. That's obviously a wide range. The short end would have Ware pushing to play in the season opener. The long end would have him out through Week 6. We'll keep an eye out for a more concrete timeline. For now, we've projected Ware to miss 3 games.

Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Ware also suffered LCL damage in that right knee.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid said Saturday that he expects RB Spencer Ware (knee) to play again this season. "It's not one of those things that's just clear cut, end of the season," Reid said. "That's not what it is right now. We've got to go through the whole process here in this case." This coincides with the previous report that Ware's ACL is intact. We're still waiting for an official diagnosis and timeline, though. Ware can't be drafted as more than a late-round bench stash at this point. Meanwhile, Reid called rookie Kareem Hunt the "regular featured back" for however long Ware is out. He's worth drafting in RB2 range now.

Injury Predictor

Ware's 2013 rookie season was ended by a fractured ankle in September. In his most extensive action as a pro this past year, he missed 1 game with a concussion and another with a rib injury. He'll need to do a better job staying on the field in 2017 if he wants to hold off rookie Kareem Hunt.
