The Lions have discussed shutting down QB Matt Stafford with his back injury, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, although the QB is still hoping to return this season. Stafford is 3 weeks removed from an injury that generally requires a 6-week recovery period. It frankly doesn't make much sense for the 3-6-1 Lions to rush him back. Schefter adds that the tiny fractures in Stafford's back are "potentially chronic" and "could be an issue for him for years to come."

Lions QB Matt Stafford (back) is out for Sunday’s game against the Redskins. Jeff Driskel gets another start after registering QB11 and QB5 finishes over the past 2 weeks. He’s a nice play in 2-QB leagues and even a spot-start option in deeper 1-QB leagues.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Lions QB Matthew Stafford has a "slim" chance to be ready for Week 12 -- but also a chance that he'll remain out until Week 17. Stafford is dealing with "tiny, non-displaced fractures in the upper thoracic spine." When he returns will depend on how long the bones take to heal, and he'll continue having weekly scans until he gets to that point. Fantasy owners need to assume that we'll be looking at Jeff Driskel for at least the next few weeks.

Lions QB Matt Stafford (back) is out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys. He didn't practice all week, so consider him iffy for Week 12. QB Jeff Driskel wasn't a disaster in Chicago last week but remains a significant downgrade for this Detroit passing game.

Lions QB Matt Stafford (back) didn't practice on Wednesday. While he's reportedly not facing a long-term absence, fantasy owners shouldn't be counting on him in Week 11 fantasy lineups. We'll get another update tomorrow.

Injury Predictor

The Lions QB played a total of only 13 games in his first 2 NFL seasons (2009 and 2010) — due entirely to injuries to his left and right shoulders. But he's appeared in all 16 games for 7 straight seasons. Stafford played through throwing-hand injuries each of the past 2 years: a dislocated middle finger late in 2016 and then a deep bruise in 2017. Stafford gets LT Taylor Decker and C Travis Swanson back to full health for 2018 and will likely get rookie Frank Ragnow as a new starter at G -- all of which can only help the QB's health.
