Panthers QB Cam Newton isn't listed on the initial Week 1 injury report. "I feel good about the work that he has done," HC Ron Rivera said Wednesday. Newton still comes with elevated risk in Week 1 fantasy lineups after that preseason foot sprain -- and the fact that Sunday will be his 1st significant action since offseason shoulder surgery. But an active Newton always brings top-5 fantasy upside.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney said Monday that QB Cam Newton (foot) is "good to go" for this weekend's opener against the Rams. That matches everything we've heard over the past week. ESPN's David Newton noted that Newton wasn't limited in the portion of Monday's practice open to the media. We'll get Carolina's 1st official injury report on Wednesday. A full practice would make Newton a green-light fantasy play.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera said Tuesday that "there's no doubt in my mind” that QB Cam Newton (foot) will be ready for the season opener. He's worked off to the side of practice the past 2 days. The question now is whether Newton's mobility and rushing production will be curtailed early on. We'll be watching his practice participation closely next week.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera told NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon that QB Cam Newton (foot) is "sore" but is expected to get reps in practice this week in preparation for Week 1. The fact that Carolina is planning to have him back on the field so soon is confirmation that Newton's injury is minor. It's still possible that his mobility is limited early in the season, but it's looking like he won't miss games with this injury.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney said Friday that QB Cam Newton has been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain. "We are cautiously optimistic he will be ready for Week 1," Hurney added. That's something less than a guarantee that Newton will be out there for the opener. We'll keep a close eye on him over the next couple of weeks. If you're drafting this week, Newton obviously comes with a bit more risk than he did 24 hours ago -- especially considering his fantasy production is closely tied to his mobility. We nudged Newton down the QB rankings.

Injury Predictor

Newton has remained remarkably durable, considering his physical, run-heavy style. The Panthers QB reportedly suffered ligament and cartilage damage to his right knee in January's playoff loss at New Orleans. The team hasn't said much, other than that Newton avoided surgery. But no one appears too concerned about the joint. Newton did have offseason shoulder surgery before 2017, so he might be in better shape for prep work this time around. Barring any issues with the knee this summer, we'd expect the same old productive fantasy QB in 2018.
