The Panthers are expected to release QB Cam Newton on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Carolina tried to trade Newton to the Bears and Chargers but couldn't get a deal done. So Cam will hit the open market. He'll turn 31 in May and has missed 16 games over the past 2 seasons with shoulder and foot injuries. The Chargers, Jaguars and Patriots seem like the best landing spots for Newton's 2020 fantasy value. We'll see where he lands.

The Panthers are "moving forward" with Cam Newton as their starting QB, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "A lot can still happen in the coming months," Rapoport adds. "While his foot is healing well, it will be several months until it’s game-ready — a timeline that complicates any potential trade." It's a hedgy report -- although it certainly makes sense that Carolina would have a tough time trading Newton while he's rehabbing that Lisfranc surgery on his left foot. We wouldn't consider this story over, but it does seem more likely than not that Newton is under center for Carolina come Week 1. He's been a fine value in early FFPC best-ball drafts, as the 21st QB off the board on average.

The Panthers are "pleased" with the progress QB Cam Newton is making in his recovery from Lisfranc surgery on his left foot, according to The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue. Newton is expected to be cleared for "some football activity" in March -- although the team is planning to limit him through the spring. That, of course, is assuming Newton is still with the Panthers. Newton said during Super Bowl week that he expects to be back in Carolina in 2020, but the team has been non-committal on his future. His status should be cleared up in March.

The Panthers are hiring Matt Rhule as their new HC, Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel reports. Rhule has been a hot name in coaching circles after he led a 1-11 Baylor team in his first season to a combined 18-9 record over the past 2 years. He spent 4 seasons as Temple's HC prior to that and also has 1 year of experience as the Giants' assistant offensive line coach under Tom Coughlin. Rhule's Baylor squads ranked 25th, 19th and 43rd in the nation in passing yards per game.

Panthers QB Cam Newton has decided to have surgery on his Lisfranc injury, according to NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon. Newton is expected to be sidelined 8 to 10 weeks, which would put him back on the field in late January or early February. Due $18.6 million in 2020 -- on top of a $2 million option bonus -- Newton's future in Carolina is completely up in the air.

Injury Predictor

Newton has remained remarkably durable, considering his physical, run-heavy style. The Panthers QB reportedly suffered ligament and cartilage damage to his right knee in January's playoff loss at New Orleans. The team hasn't said much, other than that Newton avoided surgery. But no one appears too concerned about the joint. Newton did have offseason shoulder surgery before 2017, so he might be in better shape for prep work this time around. Barring any issues with the knee this summer, we'd expect the same old productive fantasy QB in 2018.
