49ers RB Tevin Coleman has a high-ankle sprain and is considered "week-to-week," HC Kyle Shanahan said Monday. High-ankle sprains tend to be 4-6 weeks injuries, so don't bank on seeing Coleman until October. San Francisco has a Week 4 bye, so we'd consider Week 5 Coleman's earliest possible return date. His absence leaves Matt Breida as the 49ers' lead back -- and a weekly fantasy starter. Raheem Mostert moves up to #2 on the depth chart and is worth stashing in deeper fantasy leagues.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that 49ers RB Tevin Coleman is expected to miss time with the ankle injury he suffered in yesterday's win over the Bucs. Coleman is undergoing additional testing today to determine the severity of the injury, so we should learn more over the next 24 hours. His absence will leave Matt Breida atop the depth chart and Raheem Mostert as the #2 RB.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's win over the Bucs that he's "concerned" about RB Tevin Coleman's ankle injury. Coleman had a walking boot on his left foot and is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. We should learn more then. If Coleman misses time, Matt Breida will be San Francisco's lead back with Raheem Mostert the #2.

49ers RB Tevin Coleman injured his ankle in the 1st half of Sunday's game against the Bucs and has been ruled out for the rest of the day. That leaves Matt Breida as San Francisco's lead back and Raheem Mostert as the #2. We'll update Coleman's status when we learn more.

The 49ers have signed RB Tevin Coleman to a 2-year deal worth a "maximum" of $10 million. Coleman spent his first 2 NFL seasons with 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta, which will certainly help as he makes this move. Coleman joins a 49ers backfield alongside RB Jerick McKinnon, who got a 4-year, $30 million deal last offseason. We'll see how much a factor those contracts are when these guys start to battle for playing time. But we're likely looking at a committee backfield considering neither McKinnon nor Coleman profiles as a workhorse.

Injury Predictor

Coleman has missed a combined 8 games through his first 3 NFL seasons. A rib fracture and concussion claimed games in 2015. The next season brought a 3-game absence for a hamstring strain. And then came another concussion in 2017. Coleman has, at least, seen his rushing attempts per game increase every year. And there's some buzz that he could see more receiving work in 2018. Devonta Freeman will cap Coleman's upside as long as he stays healthy.
