Saints cut Smith

The Saints have cut undrafted free-agent RB Abram Smith. Don't be surprised if he lands on the team's practice squad, but we shouldn't count on Smith making a fantasy impact this season.

Saints Wire projects undrafted rookie RB Abram Smith to land on New Orleans' practice squad, leaving Dwayne Washington and Tony Jones Jr. behind Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram II on the regular-season roster. Ingram looked pretty good after returning to New Orleans from Houston last season, but he's also 32 (33 in December). The 12th-year vet does look like the #2 RB for the Saints, as expected, ahead of a pair of reserves who have done little through multiple NFL seasons and a UDFA who clearly has more to prove.

Saints reporter John Hendrix believes RB Abram Smith “looks to be ascending” and “is someone to keep an eye” as New Orleans moves to padded practices. Smith, a rookie UDFA, brings decent size (6’0, 213) and what's Lance Zierlein calls “3-down potential.” (Zierlein considered Smith, who attended Baylor, a 5th-round prospect.) The 23-year-old will need an Alvin Kamara suspension to have a shot at capturing year 1 fantasy value. But he’s at least a name to monitor in deep leagues — especially if Mark Ingram’s play declines.

Saints HC Dennis Allen gave his evaluation of RB Abram Smith during rookie minicamp. “Tough, smart, competitive, really good special teams value,” Allen said. “I think any time you’re looking at an undrafted free agent, the first thing you’re looking at is, No. 1, how does he make the team? And then No. 2, does he have the ability to be active on gameday? And for a young player, the best chance you have to be active on gameday is to contribute on special teams. And so, that was an area we felt like he was really good at.” A projected late round pick, Smith went undrafted — perhaps due to 2 past ACL tears (2014 and 2017). New Orleans supposedly had better than a UDFA grade on the Baylor product. With the Saints, Smith has a decent shot at earning a roster spot — especially with Alvin Kamara's status in limbo.
