Darren Sproles, RB UNS

10:04am EDT 4/29/18

Eagles bring back Sproles

The Eagles announced Saturday that they have agree to terms with RB Darren Sproles for 2018. Sproles missed the final 13 games last season after suffering a broken arm and torn ACL on the same play. He'll rejoin a backfield that now includes Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood and Donnell Pumphrey. The 2017 rookie, Pumphrey, looks like the worst bet to stick on the 2018 roster after a wholly disappointing debut. Smallwood's roster spot could be challenged as well, given that Philly also added RB Josh Adams as an undrafted free agent. Sproles' return also challenges the target availability for Clement. Overall, the Eagles backfield looks like a committee again, with Ajayi headed for primary ball-carrying duties, Sproles the best bet to lead the group in targets and the rest of the touches likely spread around liberally.

Eagles RB Donnel Pumphrey tore his hamstring in practice this week and is "out indefinitely," per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Pumphrey was a healthy scratch in the opener and is a candidate for IR. He's not worth rostering in redraft leagues.

UPDATE: Pumphrey has been placed on IR.

Eagles HC Doug Pederson told reporters Monday that he doesn't plan to have 1 featured RB for the season and will work out the backfield rotation by week. That's never good news for fantasy football owners, but it's not a surprise. RB Wendell Smallwood split work -- 4 carries apiece -- with LeGarrette Blount in Smallwood's lone preseason appearance. Darren Sproles didn't log a single preseason touch but obviously remains in the 2017 plans. Rookies Donnel Pumphrey and Corey Clement made the initial 53-man roster but aren't likely to garner big gameday roles early in the season. Overall, this is not a backfield to invest much fantasy capital in. Sproles and Smallwood in the later rounds of drafts are the best shots to take right now. We'll see where the situation goes.

RB Donnel Pumphrey and RB Corey Clement have each made the initial 53-man roster for the Eagles. They joined LeGarrette Blount, Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles to give the team 5 RBs. The 2 rookies are noteworthy because there was some wonder about whether they were competing for a final spot. Clement enjoyed a strong camp and preseason, while Pumphrey arrived as a 4th-round pick. Pumphrey doesn't look like a good bet to be among the 47 gameday actives, but the Eagles likely didn't believe he'd make it to the practice squad without being picked up by another team.

After creating some buzz in spring workouts, Eagles RB Donnel Pumphrey "has not stood out" lately, according to insider Jimmy Kempski. The rookie has had ball-security issues and has totaled 2 yards on 7 preseason carries. "For a player listed at 176 pounds to be an effective piece in the NFL, he better be ultra-explosive, or have some kind of elite skill set that sets him apart as a usable role player," Kempski writes. "I personally have not seen extreme explosiveness or any obvious elite traits." Pumphrey remains a fine dynasty stash but isn't worth a roster spot in redraft leagues. Darren Sproles is safe as Philly's change-of-pace, pass-catching RB.
