What You Need to Know:

  • Baltimore selected Badie in Round 6.
  • Badie checked in at just 5’8 and 197 pounds at the Scouting Combine. That’s 4th-percentile height among Combine RBs, but the 21st-percentile weight – by comparison – says he’s not just tiny.
  • Badie finished his college career with a workhorse senior season: 268 carries for 1,604 yards and 14TDs, plus 54-330-4 receiving. He dominated Missouri’s backfield in rushing and led the entire team in receptions and TD catches.
  • Badie’s 4.45-second 40 at the Combine gave him a 68th-percentile speed score.
  • The rookie’s pass-catching ability could be a differentiator, but Ravens player personnel director Joe Hortiz says the team likes him as a runner as well: “I think he’s got that versatility [with] his receiving ability. He’s quick and fast out of the backfield. He’s got really natural hands, catches the ball clean, so I think that potential exists, but you also like him as a runner. You don’t want to just pigeonhole him as a third-down back, because you watch him run inside, and you watch him bounce and cut things up into the teeth of the defense, and he runs with good pad level and balance and determination.”

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

The Ravens return J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards from ACL tears, and they’ll be the top 2 backs as long as they’re healthy. Justice Hill also returns from an Achilles’ tear, and the team signed Mike Davis after Atlanta cut him. Badie figures to battle that duo – plus any other down-the-roster options – for depth-chart positioning. He’s interesting as a later-round stash in rookie drafts but will likely need a big summer and at least 1 injury to a teammate before he reaches the redraft radar.

Ravens cut Badie

The Ravens released RB Tyler Badie. The 6th-round rookie had a surprising amount of fantasy buzz this summer but never looked like a great bet for 2022 value. We'll see if he signs elsewhere or lands on Baltimore's practice squad.

The Ravens released RB Corey Clement. He lasted just a few weeks with the team. With RB Gus Edwards (knee) likely to open the season on the PUP list, the Ravens are currently slated to head into Week 1 with RBs J.K. Dobbins, Mike Davis, Justice Hill and Tyler Badie.

The Ravens PR staff released the 1st "unofficial" depth chart of the year Friday, with RB Mike Davis the top active player at the position. That still slots him behind J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, who remain on the PUP. Justice Hill, Corey Clement, Nate McCrary and rookie Tyler Badie follow, in that order. These depth charts are notoriously unreliable, especially ahead of preseason debuts for nearly all teams. We'll be watching to see if Badie -- in particular -- works in earlier once the exhibition contests get rolling. In the meantime, Davis is worth considering as a low-owned, end-of-draft option for best-ball tournament rosters.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that there's "certainly a chance" that Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins is not ready for Week 1 of the regular season and that he might even need "a couple weeks" after that. There reportedly has been no setback with Dobbins' recovery from the ACL tear, but the team plans to not rush him back. Gus Edwards -- recovering from his own ACL tear -- "seems like he should be on track" for the opener. We'll certainly watch the status of each player through training camp and preseason. We haven't been close to drafting Dobbins at cost so far this year, though. Rookie Tyler Badie and ex-Falcons RB Mike Davis could factor in early as well, if Dobbins can't go.

Update: Dobbins responded to the Rapoport report on Twitter by saying, "I might not even go on PUP because that's how good my rehab is going and I'm damn sure going to be ready for week 1." We'll see what's true as we get closer to September.

Clifton Brown of Ravens.com believes 6th-round rookie RB Tyler Badie "has a chance to factor" this season if RBs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards struggle returning from their knee injuries. "Badie is already showing his versatility as a runner and pass catcher out of the backfield," Brown writes. It's worth noting that this comes from the team's official website in an article that basically highlighted the best-case scenario for Baltimore's entire rookie class. But it's not the first time we've heard some buzz on Badie. He'll be worth monitoring this summer.
