The Chiefs have confirmed the Thursday night fear: LB Derrick Johnson suffered a ruptured left Achilles' tendon in the win over the Raiders. That at least costs him the rest of the season and might prematurely end the veteran's career. The 34-year-old came back from a ruptured right Achilles' tendon last season, but he had suffered that injury in Week 1 of the prior year. That's about 3 months lead time on the recovery/rehab process vs. this season. Kansas City replaced Johnson with S/LB Nick Sorensen against Oakland, and the Raiders promptly attacked his area on the ground. We'll see what the Chiefs do going forward. Options include D.J. Alexander as well as Josh Mauga and Justin March, who are currently on IR but could be designated to return.
Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson left in the 2nd quarter of Thursday night's game after suffering a left leg injury. Johnson went down without contact after trying to drive off the leg. He immediately pulled his helmet off and sat on the field, shaking his head. Trainers helped Johnson off the field, with his left shoe off and no weight being put on the injured leg. We'll see about the official diagnosis, but this one looks serious.
Update: Johnson is out for the game with a left Achilles' injury.
Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson is questionable for Sunday's game at Carolina with a hamstring injury that limited his practice time all week. He appeared on the Week 9 injury report with the same issue, but Johnson put in a full practice last Friday after 2 limited days. We'll watch his status Sunday morning. The situation adds some risk, but a healthy Johnson ranks among the league's best fantasy LBs.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid said Friday that he expects to have LB Derrick Johnson and DL Mike DeVito ready for "phase one" of the team's offseason program. Both players ruptured Achilles' tendons in the 2014 opener and missed the rest of the season. Reid conceded that they'll need to "see how things roll" in the continued rehab for both players, but the outlook seems good. The early timing of the injuries can only help. That said, we'll likely head into 2015 expecting something less than his usual performance from Johnson. Torn Achilles' regularly affect players even in their return seasons, and the star LB turned 32 in November. We'll keep an eye on his offseason with our 2015 IDP rankings in mind. DeVito's not a big IDP option but would help a soft K.C. run D even at less than full power.
Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson is playing through a hamstring injury today. The situation obviously adds risk, but he also faces a strongly positive matchup in the Browns. It's up to fantasy owners to weigh the risk vs. reward.
