The Bills re-signed QB Matt Cassel just a few days after releasing him. It was a cost-cutting move for Buffalo and confirmation that no other teams are interested in Cassel's services. He'll serve as QB Tyrod Taylor's backup and could still make starts this season, but Cassel is well off the fantasy radar.
ESPN's Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys will start QB Matt Cassel when they come out of their Week 6 bye. QB Brandon Weeden was completely mediocre in 3 starts, tossing just 1 TD with 2 INTs. Cassel might be a slight upgrade, but he won't be a fantasy option and Dallas' passing game will continue to struggle. QB Tony Romo isn't eligible to return until Week 11.
The Bills have traded QB Matt Cassel to the Cowboys in exchange for a swap of late 2017 draft picks, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer. Cassel struggled mightily in Buffalo this summer and was beaten out for the starting job by QB Tyrod Taylor. In Dallas, he'll begin as QB Brandon Weeden's backup. We wouldn't rule out Cassel making starts for the Cowboys, but he won't be a fantasy option if he does.
The Bills have released QB Matt Cassel. Signed to a 2-year, $10 million deal in March, Cassel was a complete flop. He struggled throughout training camp and averaged just 5.5 yards per attempt in the preseason. Buffalo will roll with Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel at QB.
The Buffalo News' Tyler Dunne believes the Bills' starting QB job is Matt Cassel's "to lose." Cassel has reportedly strung together a couple of days of solid practices -- something he, Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel had previously been unable to do. Cassel was always the favorite to win this job because of his experience, but he still needs to avoid a disastrous preseason to be under center come Week 1. That's certainly not a given. Continue to stay far away from Bills QBs in fantasy football drafts.
A group of 35 NFL coaches and executives didn't have anything good to say about Bills QBs Matt Cassel and E.J. Manuel. Cassel "is not accurate, has a long motion, a big over-stride, a flat ball and he just looked like he has regressed," an offensive coach said. Most of the group couldn't believe Buffalo signed Cassel to be a potential starter this season. The word on Manuel wasn't any better. "Manuel has no instincts after the ball is snapped," a personnel director said. "He's a great kid, has some talent. But he could not decipher or make quick decisions in college, and I do not see him doing it now." The underwhelming top of the depth chart is why QB Tyrod Taylor has a chance to start for the Bills. But he completed just 52.7% of his college passes and has attempted just 35 throws as a pro. Buffalo's giant question mark at QB is a major concern for the team's pass catchers -- especially WR Sammy Watkins.
