The Panthers listed QB Cam Newton (shoulder) as questionable for Week 1.He practiced in full all week and will start against the 49ers on Sunday. He’s a risk/reward fantasy play in a plus matchup but having thrown just 2 passes in the preseason.

Recent Shark Bites

Panthers HC Ron Rivera told NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon that QB Cam Newton (foot) is "sore" but is expected to get reps in practice this week in preparation for Week 1. The fact that Carolina is planning to have him back on the field so soon is confirmation that Newton's injury is minor. It's still possible that his mobility is limited early in the season, but it's looking like he won't miss games with this injury.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney said Friday that QB Cam Newton has been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain. "We are cautiously optimistic he will be ready for Week 1," Hurney added. That's something less than a guarantee that Newton will be out there for the opener. We'll keep a close eye on him over the next couple of weeks. If you're drafting this week, Newton obviously comes with a bit more risk than he did 24 hours ago -- especially considering his fantasy production is closely tied to his mobility. We nudged Newton down the QB rankings.

ESPN's David Newton reported Thursday night that a "league source" said the initial diagnosis for Panthers QB Cam Newton was a sprained left ankle. The QB is headed for more testing on Friday, which should help clear up the situation. Newton did leave the stadium under his own power (and his ever-unique fashion sense) with a boot on that left foot. We'll watch for updates to see if we need to alter Newton's outlook for fantasy football drafts this weekend.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport hears that Panthers QB Cam Newton's foot injury "doesn't appear to be serious." That matches what we heard from former NFL head team Dr. David Chao. "He may get tests tomorrow, regardless," Rapoport adds. Stay tuned for more updates.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera said after Thursday night's game that QB Cam Newton is in a walking boot but gave no further update on the foot injury. "Walking boot" sounds scary, but it's often a precautionary measure, so we're not reading too much into it. We should learn more about Newton's status on Friday.
