Saints WR Brandon Coleman (neck) is out for Sunday's playoff game against the Vikings. He played 50% of New Orleans' offensive snaps and hauled in 4 of 5 targets last week. His absence pushes Willie Snead into #3 WR duties.
The Saints have released WR Brandon Coleman. Serving mostly as a reserve slot man and 4th wideout, Coleman ranked just 5th on the team in targets and catches last year, 7th in each category the year before. He wouldn't have been much of a 2018 fantasy factor, but his departure leaves more available for players such as rookie WR Tre'Quan Smith and veteran WR Ted Ginn. Free-agent acquisition Cameron Meredith already appeared headed for the #2 WR role behind Michael Thomas.
There's been lots of early buzz on Saints rookie WR Michael Thomas. But John DeShazier of the team's official website expects Brandon Coleman to beat out Thomas for the #3 WR job. "He’s a huge target who likely is scratching the surface on learning how to use his huge frame," DeShazier writes. The 6'6, 225-pound Coleman came on late last season, tallying 16 catches, 231 yards and 1 TD in the final 5 games. We'll be keeping a close eye on this battle this summer. The winner could be a weekly fantasy starter in New Orleans' high-scoring, pass-heavy offense.
Saints HC Sean Payton named WR Brandon Coleman as the player who impressed him most in training camp. He's been buzzing since way back in the spring and appears to have passed Nick Toon for the #3 spot on the depth chart. Coleman went undrafted last year and spent his rookie season on the practice squad. But the light bulb seems to have flicked on for the 6'6, 225-pounder. Coleman ran a 4.56-second 40 time at the Combine and scored on 20 of his 94 college catches -- an elite 21.3% TD rate. There's opportunity in New Orleans' passing game with the offseason departures of Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills. Coleman is squarely on the sleeper radar.
Saints HC Sean Payton announced that WR Brandon Coleman will get reps with the 1st-team offense in the 2nd preseason game. The 2nd-year WR has had a strong offseason and appears to be pushing WR Nick Toon for the #3 spot on the depth chart. The winner of that battle could be a spot-start option for your fantasy squad this season.
Saints insider Nick Underhill believes WR Brandon Coleman is "separating himself from the pack." The "pack" includes Seantavius Jones, Joe Morgan and Josh Morgan, who are competing with Coleman for the #4 WR job. Coleman has "consistently looked good" and "knows how to use his body to get open and runs good routes," Underhill writes. We'll continue to monitor this training camp battle, but Coleman would need to ascend past WR Nick Toon to 3rd on the depth chart to be a reliable fantasy play.
