49ers WR Trent Taylor underwent what HC Kyle Shanahan called a "minor" back surgery earlier this offseason. Taylor has been sidelined since but is expected to be ready "at or near the beginning of training camp," per Shanny. Taylor hauled in 43 of 60 targets (71.7%) for 430 yards and 2 TDs as a rookie last year. He faces stiff competition for playing time this season, though, with 2nd-round rookie Dante Pettis joining veterans Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin. We'll see how soon Taylor is able to get back on the field, but he's not worth a pick in fantasy drafts right now.

Recent Shark Bites

49ers WRs Trent Taylor (foot) and Jalen Hurd (back) are out for Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Deebo Samuel and Marquise Goodwin served as San Francisco’s top 2 WRs in the opener. We’ll see if WR Dante Pettis plays a bigger role in Week 2, but try to avoid this situation in fantasy lineups.

49ers WR Trent Taylor underwent surgery to repair a broken foot, GM John Lynch said in an interview during Saturday night's preseason opener. Lynch didn't give a timetable for Taylor's return, only saying he hopes to get him back "early" in the season. We'll keep an eye on his rehab, but Taylor isn't worth rostering in redraft leagues. San Francisco's WR depth chart remains seemingly fluid at this point, with Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel, Marquise Goodwin, Kendrick Bourne, Richie James, Jordan Matthews and Jalen Hurd battling for playing time.

Niners WR Trent Taylor tells NBC Sports Bay Area that he never felt fully healthy throughout 2018 following offseason back surgery. Taylor had the procedure before OTAs but said the situation kept him from going through a normal offseason and kept him short of 100% throughout the year. He says he's "back to normal" now, though, and looking forward to a proper offseason. Taylor could also benefit from the coaching staff adding Wes Welker, who spent the past 2 years as a Texans assistant. With Pierre Garcon gone and QB Jimmy Garoppolo returning, 49ers WRs make for interesting later shots to take in 2019 best-ball drafting. Dante Pettis and Marquise Goodwin figure to occupy the top 2 depth-chart spots. But Taylor, Kendrick Bourne and Richie James could compete for the #3 role and primary slot duty.

The 49ers selected Louisiana Tech WR Trent Taylor in the 5th round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The small-school version of Ryan Switzer, Taylor goes 5’8 and 181 pounds with a 26th percentile SPARQ score. That obviously makes him a long shot for fantasy value, although he did put up huge numbers in a pass-happy college offense.
