The 49ers' backfield took another hit over the weekend. RB Joe Williams suffered a rib fracture and a "deep" hip bruise in Saturday's game against the Texans, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. He's expected to miss "at least the opening of the regular season." Williams faced opportunity in the wake of injuries to Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida. His injuries now give way to Alfred Morris, Jeremy McNichols and Raheem Mostert. We'll see if Williams can make his way to 2018 relevance.

The 49ers have released RB Joe Williams. HC Kyle Shanahan "banging the table" for Williams was 1 of the big fantasy storylines of last year's draft. He ends up recording 0 carries for San Francisco. Williams suffered a rib fracture and hip bruise in the 2nd preseason game but is healthy now, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. We'll see where Williams lands, but his dynasty value is fading fast. Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida and Alfred Morris will open the season as the 49ers' top 3 RBs.

Niners RB Joe Williams spent his rookie season on IR after a disappointing summer. But NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco says the 4th-round pick "looks like a different player" this year. “I think Joe has a lot of ability,” HC Kyle Shanahan said. “And it’s very apparent he’s had a different mindset this year than he did last year. Sometimes, that just takes time. Everybody handles it differently. It took Joe a little bit, mentality-wise.” The 49ers moved up to select Williams in Round 4 of the 2017 draft, and then fantasy nation fell in love after Peter King relayed the story of Shanahan advocating for him in the war room. A backfield with Jerick McKinnon as the new starter and Matt Breida as the only meaningful incumbent leaves room for Williams to carve out a role. We'll be curious to see where Williams resides on the depth chart once preseason arrives. He's at least a dynasty hold.

The 49ers will place RB Joe Williams on IR today because of an ankle injury, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. We hadn't heard anything about the injury before, so this move is likely at least as motivated by the 4th-round rookie not being ready to contribute on offense. Placing Williams on IR before setting the 53-man roster makes him in eligible to be designated for return this season. Matt Breida, meanwhile, looks increasingly secure as the backup to RB Carlos Hyde.

Niners rookie RB Joe Williams ran for 60 yards on 7 carries in Friday night's preseason opener at Kansas City -- an 8.6-yard average -- and showed the quick acceleration that got many excited about him around draft time. Just as notably, however, Williams was the 3rd RB in, following Carlos Hyde and undrafted rookie Matt Breida. Hyde had a quiet night -- 2 carries, 0 yards -- but appears to be in good shape to keep his starting role. We'll see where the Williams-Breida competition goes behind him, though. Breida has generated some slight buzz in training camp.

The 49ers selected Utah RB Joe Williams in the 4th round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Williams has red flag character concerns in his past — he was suspended at UConn for credit card theft in 2013 and quit abruptly while with Utah in 2016. He returned to the Utes after 1 month after the team endured backfield injuries. On the field, Williams will need to improve his ball security and prove that he can threaten defenses out of the backfield. But he’s an impressive athlete from both a speed and agility perspective. The 23-year-old really displayed his talent this past season vs. UCLA, ripping off 332 yards on 29 carries. Now in San Francisco, he'll compete with Tim Hightower and others for a reserve role behind Carlos Hyde. Note that Hyde is entering a contract year.
