Shark Bites

Broncos TE Jake Butt tore his left ACL during Thursday's walkthrough, according to insider Mike Klis. He'll miss the rest of the season. This is Butt's 3rd ACL tear, although the first 2 were to his right knee. His absence leaves Jeff Heuerman as Denver's top TE. He remains off the fantasy radar.

Recent Shark Bites

The Denver Post's Kyle Fredrickson considers Jake Butt the Broncos' "likely starter" at TE. Last year's 5th-rounder missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL but is back to 100% now. He won the 2016 Mackey Award as the nation's top TE after posting a 46-546-4 line. Butt's biggest competition will come from Jeff Heuerman, who has just 18 career catches. There isn't a whole lot of upside here with WRs Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders hogging targets in Denver. But ... Butt is at least worth a look at the end of TE-premium drafts like the FFPC.

The Broncos believe TE Jake Butt is ready to play a "significant role" this season, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold. Butt spent his rookie year on IR after suffering a torn ACL in his final college game. It was a rough ending to an impressive career at Michigan that saw Butt start 37 games and win the 2016 Mackey Award as the nation's top TE. The 6'6, 250-pounder certainly has the potential to develop into a quality NFL starter. We'll see if he can become a fantasy factor behind WRs Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders this season.

The Broncos grabbed Michigan TE Jake Butt with the 1st pick of the 5th round. Butt’s college career was marred by a pair of right ACL tears — the 1st as a freshman back in 2013 and the 2nd this past December. Those sandwiched a productive career that saw him post a 51-654-3 line in 2015 and a 46-546-4 in 12 games last season. The senior-year performance earned him the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top TE. Butt wasn’t able to work out in the pre-draft process but looks like a mediocre athlete on film. (He averaged a middling 11.9 yards per catch at Michigan.) But he has good size at 6’5, 246 pounds, is an advanced route runner and has strong hands. He profiles as a shorter-range target in the pros. Think Heath Miller. Butt said back in March that he could be rehabbing the latest torn ACL until anywhere from July to October. Don’t expect a fantasy impact this year, but this could be Denver’s starting TE by 2018.
