Patriots QB Cam Newton has been activated from the COVID list. He'll return for Sunday's game against the Broncos. Newton was reportedly asymptomatic, but we're still curious to see if he shows any ill-effects from the virus. It adds some risk to Newton's Week 6 outlook, but he sits safely inside QB1 territory in our rankings. Newton's return is a significant upgrade for WRs Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry.

Recent Shark Bites

Patriots QB Cam Newton was pulled with his team trailing 33-6 in the 4th quarter of Sunday's game vs. the 49ers. He was abysmal in this one, completing 9 of 15 passes for 98 yards, 0 TDs and 3 INTs. Newton has 0 TDs and 5 INTs in 2 games since returning from the COVID list We imagine the Pats will go back to him, but we'll see what we hear over the next couple of days.

Update: HC Bill Belichick said, "Yeah, absolutely," when asked after the game if Newton remains his starting QB.

The Patriots had at least 1 and possibly 2 COVID tests come back positive on Friday, ESPN's Mike Reiss and Field Yates report. So the Patriots-Broncos game -- which was already pushed back a week -- is again in jeopardy. We'll continue to update this situation as we learn more.

Patriots QB Cam Newton has been added to the COVID list and is out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Fantasy owners should plan on him missing multiple games. No other Patriots have been added to the list as of now. New England will turn to QB Jarrett Stidham vs. Kansas City -- a significant downgrade to the offense. Expect a run-heavy game plan from New England.

Update: The Patriots will start QB Brian Hoyer vs. the Chiefs, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Hoyer is at least more experienced than Stidham but is still a downgrade for the Patriots' skill-position guys.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Patriots named QB Cam Newton their starter in a team meeting Thursday afternoon. It's certainly no surprise after Newton clearly worked ahead of Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer as camp progressed. But it's nice to get official word. Newton gets a nice opening matchup with Miami at home, and his history clearly displays tremendous fantasy upside. We'll be quite interested to see Newton's early games to see how close he is to Carolina form. But Newton's well worth betting on outside of the top 12 QBs in fantasy football drafts.

"Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is adapting the offense, especially from a running game perspective, to amplify [QB Cam] Newton’s athleticism and ability to run the football at a high level." That's according to insider Evan Lazar after observing training camp so far. It's not surprising that the Patriots are altering the offense as they move from Tom Brady to Cam Newton -- but the confirmation is nice. If New England takes full advantage of Cam's mobility, he'll boast QB1 potential.
