The Ravens drafted Alabama LB C.J. Mosley with the 17th pick of the NFL draft. Mosley tallied 108 and 107 tackles the past 2 seasons, with 6.5 total sacks and 5 INTs for his career. Mosley and 2013 second-round LB Arthur Brown look like the future inside for Baltimore, though they could cannibalize each other's IDP value to some extent. For now, veteran LB Daryl Smith blocks 1 of the 2 youngsters from the starting lineup. Don't look for either to factor heavily into our 2014 IDP rankings.
The Baltimore Sun called Ravens LB Daryl Smith's Thursday night debut for the team a "memorable" performance. The team website said he "put on a show." Either way, Smith certainly impressed in his 1st outing as Baltimore's new MLB -- Ray Lewis' old role. The Sun called Smith the "most active" defender, as he delivered a team-high 5 tackles and nearly forced a Mike Glennon fumble on a blitz. Heralded rookie LB Arthur Brown subbed in for weak-side starter Josh Bynes. After the game, HC John Harbaugh said it was just more of what Smith had done in Jacksonville for years. The veteran is looking like a starter and a strong IDP sleeper candidate. You'll be able to get him very late in your fantasy football draft -- unless people take notice of this performance.
LB Daryl Smith has signed a 1-year deal with the Ravens. The Baltimore Sun reports that the longtime Jaguar is expected to compete for a starting ILB job. Baltimore's top contenders there are 2nd-round rookie Arthur Brown and Jameel McClain. Each player is working back from offseason surgery. Smith started at all 3 LB spots and proved quite effective in Jacksonville's 4-3 over 8 seasons before a groin injury cost him all of 2012. Smith enjoyed his 3 best fantasy seasons in his final 3 healthy years with the Jags. He ranked among the top 25 IDP LBs in 2009 and 2011. Don't be surprised if he earns a lineup spot come Week 1.
The Ravens announced Thursday that rookie LB Arthurn Brown had sports hernia surgery just after the team's rookie minicamp earlier this month. Brown is expected to miss 4-6 weeks total, which would bring him back before the start of training camp. As long as he's ready to go in late July, Brown should still be the front-runner to win a starting ILB job in Baltimore. He should be 1 of the first rookie IDPs of the board whether you're drafting in a dynasty league or redraft format.
The Ravens traded up in Round 2 to grab Kansas State LB Arthur Brown. The brother of Eagles RB Bryce Brown tallied 201 tackles over 2 seasons with the Wildcats after transferring from Miami. He brings position versatility but could settle into Ray Lewis' old spot. Brown grabbed 2 INTs, broke up 6 passes and collected 3 sacks at K-State. If he can prove worthy of a 3-down role right away, he could start for your IDP squad as a rookie.
