Putting together accurate fantasy football rankings is hard. Really hard.
That’s not a cop out. And it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to put together accurate fantasy rankings. It just means we need to curb our expectations. We need to grade on a scale.
As Draft Sharks founder Lenny Pappano wrote in Confessions of a Fantasy Football Expert over 15 years ago now, “Championships are won by those who suck the least at making projections.” Said differently, we win in fantasy football by being less wrong than our competition.
That’s why we grade ourselves after every season by comparing our preseason rankings not to the final fantasy-point standings, but to preseason ADP (i.e. the consensus). If we rank that big bust a bit lower than consensus, you won’t draft him. Rank that late-round breakout just a tad higher and he’s more likely to land on your roster.
So here’s a look at the top 25 QBs, 40 RBs, 50 WRs and 20 TEs — plus some other notables — and where we ranked them vs. ADP. Hits are in greens; misses in red.
Of course, the best measure of how well we did our job this past season is how you did in your fantasy leagues. So we’d love to hear from you — either in the comments section below or via email at email@example.com.
