What You Need to Know:

  • Schwartz landed with the Browns in Round 3 of the 2021 draft, the 15th WR off the board.
  • He won’t turn 22 until Sept. 5.
  • He didn’t break out in college until his 3rd (age 20) season at Auburn. Schwartz led that team in receptions but trailed fellow draftee Seth Williams in yards and TDs.
  • Schwartz blazed a 4.27-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.
  • He played 53% of offensive snaps in the 2021 opener but then reached 50% just 2 other times the rest of the year.
  • Schwartz missed 3 games after a Week 10 concussion, a span that surrounded the Week 13 bye. He returned for the final 4 games and played a season high 36 snaps in the finale.
  • A nagging hamstring injury cost him most of training camp and the preseason.
  • The rookie checked in just 11th on the team in targets, garnering 4 fewer than Kareem Hunt did in 8 games, 2 fewer than Nick Chubb collected in a matching 14 games and 2 fewer than #3 RB Dontrell Hilliard claimed.
  • Schwartz caught a mere 43.5% of those targets. A deep 17.2-yard average depth of target factored into that.
  • HC Kevin Stefanski said in April that the team expects a “big year” from Schwartz, but it’s not clear yet how he fits. Amari Cooper will start after the team traded for him and his big contract. Donovan Peoples-Jones profiles as an outside WR as well and showed big-play ability last year. The team spent a 3rd-round pick on WR David Bell.
  • Schwartz finished his college career by running 51.6% of pass plays from the slot. He spent just 24.3% in that position as a Browns rookie, though. Schwartz may wind up competing primarily with DPJ for a role.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Schwartz arrived as a lackluster prospect with speed. He then put up a lackluster rookie campaign (albeit with injuries at play). If Deshaun Watson avoids suspension, the Browns’ pass offense could get a large boost. But that seems less likely all the time. Regardless of the QB, the best bet for Schwartz looks like a competition with Donovan Peoples-Jones. We’d bet DPJ in that race, and neither figures to be exciting for lineup-setting fantasy football leagues.

Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR CLE

DPJ leads Browns Week 1 receiving

WR Donovan Peoples-Jones led the Browns in targets (11), receptions (6) and receiving yards (60) in Sunday's win over the Panthers. He beat WR Amari Cooper by 5 targets, while RB Kareem Hunt was the only other Cleveland player to catch more than 3 balls or crack 20 receiving yards. Cooper managed just a 3-17 receiving line on his 6 looks. Anthony Schwartz drew the only other 2 targets among WRs.

Browns WR David Bell got some reps with the 1st-team offense in OTAs, according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson. Amari Cooper is locked in as Cleveland's #1 WR, and it sounds like Bell, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Anthony Schwartz are competing for the next 3 spots on the depth chart. Bell has drawn positive reviews so far from both coaches and beat writers. Consider him the favorite for primary slot duties this season, making the rookie an intriguing late-round pick in fantasy drafts.

Browns WR Anthony Schwartz said he's not yet 100% recovered from lingering injuries. Schwartz missed a chunk of training camp with a hamstring issue — then sat out 3 games with a concussion. “It's not really soft-tissue stuff. It's a little bit more than that,” he said via the Akron Beacon Journal. “[I’m] mainly just getting my health back, trying to get everything from the season out of me, so I'm able to train fully and able to not have any setbacks. I really want to get my speed back to where I know it can be and being able to keep that speed up throughout the season and being able to stay healthy throughout the season, so I can contribute — be one of the top guys on the team.” Schwartz’s speed is indeed his best trait — he blazed a 4.27 forty-time at Auburn’s Pro Day. A 2021 3rd-round pick, the 6’0, 186-pounder carries some sleeper appeal in deep dynasty formats.

Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday night’s game vs. the Ravens after getting in limited practices on Thursday and Friday. DPJ isn’t a fantasy option at less than 100%. WR Anthony Schwartz (concussion) has been ruled out.

Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (groin) is questionable for this weekend’s game vs. the Lions. He tweaked his groin on Wednesday, was sidelined on Thursday and then limited in Friday’s practice. DPJ shouldn’t be in your fantasy plans at less than 100%. WR Anthony Schwartz (concussion) is out for Week 11.
