We’ll have detailed analysis of this player’s performance added here after each week’s game. Weekly outlooks are posted Tuesday at 1pm EST each week.
Thompson broke out in a big way last season. He checked in 6th among DBs in total fantasy points, led by a #2 finish at the position in total tackles. His 121 in that category was just 3 more than fellow Cardinals S Buddy Baker collected in 2 more games the year before, and 26 fewer than Baker's 16-game total for 2019. So it's repeatable production for Thompson.
Why did he suddenly take over the tackle lead among Cardinals safeties? According to Pro Football Focus, Baker played primarily at free safety for the 1st time in his career. Thompson, meanwhile, spent 49.4% of his snaps either "in the box" or at slot corner, compared with 46.1% at deep safety.
Unless that changes in 2022, we'd bet on Thompson once again leading the position in tackles for Arizona. That sets him up with a sturdier floor than Baker. We'll see whether the change from Jordan Hicks (gone to Minnesota) to 2nd-year man Zaven Collins at ILB affects Thompson's scoring opportunities.
