What You Need to Know:

  • Robinson broke out in 2020 with 240-1,070-7 in 14 games. He caught 49 of 60 targets, mainly alongside Gardner Minshew and Mike Glennon.
  • 2021 was an arduous one under HC Urban Meyer. The offense lacked any direction, while veteran Carlos Hyde was inexplicably given carries.
  • Robinson still finished as an RB1 in 6 weeks (14 games played). He got there with help from a high TD rate (8 scores on 164 attempts).
  • Among 31 RBs with 150+ carries, Robinson ranked 12th in PFF Elusive Rating, 5th in YAC per attempt and 3rd in YPC. He ranked just 25th in yards per route run.
  • Robinson’s season ended in December following a torn Achilles. He’s not a lock to play Week 1.
  • Travis Etienne — who missed all of 2021 with a Lisfranc (foot injury) is on track to be a full-go for the season.
  • Jacksonville upgraded the coaching staff, swapping out failed HC Urban Meyer for former SB champ Doug Pederson. Press Taylor — Bengals HC Zac Taylor's brother and a former staff member in Philly — will handle the OC role.
  • In 5 years as Philly's HC, Pederson's Eagles ranked top-10 in rush attempts 3 times.
  • Snoop Conner arrived as a Day 3 pick, but he doesn’t project for much of a ’22 role.
  • Jacksonville’s O-line improved with the arrival of G Brandon Scherff
  • The pass-catching corps looks better following the signings of Christian Kirk, Zay Jones and Evan Engram.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

A former UDFA, Robinson’s certainly done well to make a name for himself. He’s totaled 1,837 yards and 15 TDs across 2 seasons.

Year 3 sets up much differently, though. While the Jags overall environment improved, Robinson is coming off a serious Achilles tear. And a now-healthy Travis Etienne provides legit competition on early and passing downs.

A candidate to miss early-season games, Robinson’s not a preferred draft day target.

James Robinson avoids PUP list

Jaguars RB James Robinson (Achilles) will not be placed on the PUP list to open training camp, HC Doug Pederson said. That makes Robinson ineligible for the reserve PUP, which means Jacksonville believes he'll be available before Week 5. Robinson is just about 7 months removed from tearing his left Achilles. We're still not excited about his 2022 fantasy outlook, but his surprisingly fast recovery from this injury is at least a slight concern for folks hoping for a Travis Etienne breakout this season.

Jaguars RB James Robinson has resumed running. An Instagram video shows him running around half speed, but consider it a step forward in his return from a late-December Achilles tear. Previously, HC Doug Pederson had said that a return to the field for training camp is realistic. Time will tell on that. But with Robinson’s role and effectiveness in question, we’re circling Travis Etienne as a Round 4 target.

Jaguars RB Travis Etienne (Lisfranc) told reporters on Monday that he's been running in the pool and will resuming running on the field soon. He expects to be ready for the start of camp. Etienne underwent surgery on September 2 to repair the Lisfranc tear in his left foot. He was expected to be sidelined for 4 months, so it sounds like his rehab is on track. Etienne should be ready to roll for the start of the 2022 season. We can't say the same for RB James Robinson, who tore his left Achilles in late December.

Jaguars RB James Robinson has a torn Achilles, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That not only ends Robinson's 2021 season but also puts his status for the start of 2022 in question. We'll track his rehab this offseason. It looks like Dare Ogunbowale will close out the season as Jacksonville's lead back.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Jaguars RB James Robinson suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in Sunday's game against the Jets. That will obviously end his season. We'll see whether the injury challenges his availability for the start of the 2022 campaign.
