Falcons Expected to Add Tua Tagovailoa

Falcons Expected to Add Tua Tagovailoa

NFL Network reports that the Falcons are expected to sign QB Tua Tagovailoa to a league-minimum deal. Any agreement can't officially be made until the Dolphins' release of the veteran processes later this week.

The Falcons announced Wednesday that QB Michael Penix Jr. will miss the rest of the season after further evaluation determined that he needs surgery. Penix partially tore his left ACL. That officially puts the offense under Kirk Cousins' control the rest of the way, with Easton Stick the likely backup.

The Falcons won't play QB Kirk Cousins at all in the preseason, but don't worry. Cousins says he'll line up behind center for the regular-season opener.

The Falcons have agreed to a four-year deal with QB Kirk Cousins, his agent announced Monday. That obviously gives Atlanta the best QB it has had since Matt Ryan left after the 2021 season. Cousins is coming off an Oct. 29 Achilles' tendon tear. We'll have to watch his progress through the summer. But the Falcons' commitment says they believe he'll be ready to lead the offense. Moving away from WR Justin Jefferson and TE T.J. Hockenson presents a challenge. But Cousins inherits arguably even more overall talent in Atlanta: WR Drake London, "TE" Kyle Pitts, and RB Bijan Robinson. As long as Cousins is physically ready, this will be an intriguing 2024 offense. London already landed among our fantasy football breakouts for 2024. Minnesota now has a big question to answer at QB, with Cousins and Baker Mayfield (who had been a potential free agent) off the market.

Falcons QB Desmond Ridder has teammates fired up about his leadership heading into his second season. “When he talks, you listen,” TE Jonnu Smith told The Athletic. “Having leadership qualities is the most important trait you should have as a quarterback. He has that. He’s been coming in here and working his butt off. I have nothing but great things to say about Desmond.” Those words come from a seventh-year veteran heading into his age-28 season and in his first offseason with the Falcons. Others had similar praise for Ridder, who has not only led on-field work but reportedly been organizing events with teammates away from the field. All of this could mean nothing for his in-game performance. And Taylor Heinicke stands in wait as Ridder insurance. But all signs point to the Falcons hoping that Ridder will be their guy for at least the near future. He’s a fine late shot to take in superflex drafts. Check out his spot in our superflex rankings.
