Former Steelers TE Jesse James has reached a deal with the Lions, according to multiple reports. The contract figures to easily position James as the lead TE in Detroit and likely give him a shot at career highs in targets and receptions. James topped out at 63 looks and 43 catches with Pittsburgh in 2017. We remain unexcited about his fantasy football outlook.

Steelers TE Jesse James left Saturday's preseason game against the Titans with a back contusion. It doesn't sound like a serious issue, and James hasn't been a prominent fantasy factor. But he stands to gain opportunity if Vance McDonald (foot) isn't ready for the regular-season opener. We'll keep an eye on the status of both players.

Steelers TE Jesse James believes he's capable of starting if TE Ladarius Green's health woes persist. No question I can do it,” James said. “I feel really good about it. The coaches feel pretty good about it, I believe. I am trying to get better every day and be ready come September. I am going to put my head down, go to work and try to make the most of it.” Last year's 5th-round pick caught just 8 balls as a rookie playing behind Heath Miller. But James posted a 14.1% TD rate at Penn State and goes 6'7, 260 pounds. If Green misses regular-season times, James could hop on the fantasy radar as a TD-or-bust spot start option.

The Steelers added TE Jesse James in the 5th round of the 2015 NFL Draft.  Pittsburgh is looking for Heath Miller's heir apparent and reportedly tried to trade up in the 2nd round for Maxx Williams.  They settle for James instead.  He's not as fluid as Williams, but James is a monster 6'7, 261-pounder with a 37.5-inch vertical.  That should at least make him a dangerous red-zone weapon.  We'll see if he can develop into more than that.
