Basic Stats Preseason Player Analysis

What You Need to Know:

  • Akins missed 3 games last year with a concussion and ankle injury.
  • He set career highs with 3.8 targets, 2.8 catches and 31 yards per game.
  • Akins finished 28th among TEs in PPR points per game; 33rd in non-PPR.
  • He scored at a top-12 level in only 3 of 13 games. That 23% rate ranked 27th at the position.
  • Akins ranked 20th in yards per route run and 14th in Pro Football Focus receiving grade among 43 TEs with 30+ targets last year.
  • That was an improvement from 2019, Akins’ 2nd NFL season, when he finished 34th in both yards per route run and receiving grade.
  • The Texans released TE Darren Fells, who ranked 8th on the team and 2nd among TEs with 28 targets last season. They traded for TE Ryan Izzo and drafted TE Brevin Jordan in the 5th round. TE Kahale Warring also returns.
  • Will Fuller’s departure leaves Houston with 1 of the weakest WR rooms in the league: Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, Nico Collins, Chris Conley and Keke Coutee look like the top 5.
  • With Deshaun Watson’s Texans future looking extremely shaky, Akins could be catching passes from some combination of QBs Tyrod Taylor and Davis Mills this season.
    • Taylor has thrown just 121 passes over the last 3 seasons and sports a career 7.0 yards-per-attempt average.
    • Mills is a 3rd-round rookie who made just 11 starts at Stanford.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Akins is part of a crowded TE room in Houston but will head to training camp as the favorite for targets. Brandin Cooks is the only quality, proven WR on the roster -- so there’s opportunity for Akins to see nice volume.

The problems: He’s a mediocre talent and figures to be dealing with subpar QB play on a bad offense if Deshaun Watson isn’t around. It leaves Akins as an unexciting TE2.

Texans TE Jordan Akins (concussion, ankle) put in a full week of practice and isn’t listed on the final injury report. He’ll return for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. It’s unclear how snaps and targets will be divvied between Akins and TE Darren Fells, so try to avoid the situation in Week 9 fantasy lineups.

Texans TE Jordan Akins (ankle, concussion) has put in 2 full practices so far this week. It looks like he's on track to return for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Akins was operating as Houston's clear lead TE before the injuries, but we'll see how snaps and targets are divvied between he and TE Darren Fells now. It's a situation to avoid in Week 9 fantasy lineups.

Texans TE Jordan Akins (ankle, concussion) is inactive for today’s game against the Packers. TE Darren Fells gets another start and is a viable fantasy play in what should be a shootout.

Texans TE Jordan Akins (ankle, concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Packers. He didn’t practice all week, though, so fantasy owners shouldn’t be counting on him. Akins’ absence would make TE Darren Fells a viable spot starter in this likely shootout.

Texans TE Jordan Akins (ankle, concussion) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Titans. That leaves Darren Fells as Houston's lead TE. He ran a route on 71% of Deshaun Watson's drop backs but saw just 2 targets last week. Fells is a mid-range TE2 for Week 6.
