Basic Stats Preseason Player Analysis

What You Need to Know:

  • Jones signed a 2-year, $12.5 million contract with the Jaguars in free agency. He got $9 million guaranteed.
  • He spent the past 5 seasons in Detroit, averaging 4.2 catches, 62.3 yards and .52 TDs per game.
  • Jones finished as a top-30 PPR WR in 3 of those 5 seasons, including a WR18 finish last year on a 76-978-9 line.
  • Among 87 WRs with 50+ targets last season, Jones ranked 37th in yards per target, 52nd in yards per route run and 39th in Pro Football Focus receiving grade.
  • Jones beat new teammates Laviska Shenault and D.J. Chark in PFF receiving grade last year.
  • The Jaguars got a big QB upgrade when they selected Trevor Lawrence with the #1 overall pick of this year’s draft.
  • Lawrence was excellent throwing deep last year, earning an elite 97.7 PFF grade on deep passes. That meshes well with Jones, who’s been a strong downfield receiver throughout his career. He ranked 21st among 96 qualifying WRs in PFF deep receiving grade last year.
  • The Jaguars remade their coaching staff this offseason, hiring Urban Meyer as HC and Darrell Bevell at OC.
  • This will be Meyer’s 1st NFL stint after over 30 years in the college ranks. He most recently served as Ohio State's HC from 2012-2018, leading the Buckeyes to an 83-9 record and 1 national championship. He also won 2 titles among 6 seasons as Florida's HC and spent 2 years before that as HC at Utah.
  • Meyer is an offensive-minded coach. He deployed a spread offense for much of his time in college and prioritizes speed.
  • Jones played under Bevell in Detroit the past 2 seasons.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Jones turned 31 in March but remained plenty effective in Detroit last year, posting a 76-978-9 line and finishing 18th among WRs in PPR points.

Now Jones heads to Jacksonville under new HC Urban Meyer and QB Trevor Lawrence. We’ll watch for clues this summer about how targets will be divvied between Jones, D.J. Chark and Laviska Shenault -- but don’t be surprised if Jones plays a big role in this passing game. He notably played for new Jaguars OC Darrell Bevell in Detroit the past 2 seasons.

Highlight Jones as a strong value pick in the later rounds of your fantasy draft.

WR Marvin Jones has agreed to a 2-year, $14.5 million deal with the Jaguars, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. (That includes $9.2 million guaranteed.) Jones reunites with OC Darrell Bevell, who ran the Detroit offense the past 2 years and now serves as Jacksonville's OC. Jones also joins a receiving corps led by D.J. Chark and 2nd-year WR Laviska Shenault. Those 3 figure to lead the depth chart, leaving little room for Keelan Cole, Chris Conley or Collin Johnson to find relevance. Jones played all 16 games last year for the 1st time in 3 seasons, catching a career-high 76 balls for 978 yards and 9 TDs. His arrival complicates the target outlook for Chark and Shenault.

Lions WR Marvin Jones (knee) isn’t listed on the final injury report. He was sidelined on Wednesday, limited on Thursday and a full-go on Friday. So the knee isn’t a real concern heading into this weekend’s game against the Falcons. But Jones has done nothing so far this season to earn a spot in your fantasy lineup.

Lions WR Marvin Jones (knee) returned to a limited practice on Thursday. That gives him a shot to play against the Falcons this weekend. We'll get another update on Jones tomorrow.

Lions WR Marvin Jones (knee) didn't practice on Wednesday. We haven't heard anything about this knee issue. Jones has been brutal this season, averaging just 29 yards per game. Even if he plays in Sunday's plus matchup vs. Atlanta, he can't be trusted in fantasy lineups.

Lions WR Marvin Jones has been placed on IR with an ankle injury suffered near the end of Sunday's loss to the Vikings. He ends the 2019 campaign with a 62-779-9 line -- although 6 of those scores came in 2 games. Turning 30 in March, Jones should be back as Detroit's #2 WR next year. WR Chris Lacy is next up on the Lions' depth chart for the rest of this season, but he's not a realistic fantasy option. Jones' absence should just mean more targets for WRs Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola.
