Kelley to IR

The Redskins have placed RB Rob Kelley on IR with a toe injury suffered in Week 2. It's unclear if he's a candidate to be designated to return after 8 weeks. Either way, Kelley can be dropped in all fantasy leagues. He played just 9 offensive snaps through 2 games, so there's not much fantasy impact here. Samaje Perine will step in as Washington's #3 RB but isn't worth rostering.

Redskins RB Adrian Peterson will start Sunday's opener against the Cardinals, ESPN's John Keim reports. It's unclear how many carries RB Rob Kelley will get, and RB Chris Thompson will dominate passing-down work. Peterson sits 30th in our Week 1 non-PPR RB Rankings and 37th in PPR.

Redskins RB Samaje Perine returned for Thursday night's preseason finale after spraining his ankle in the 2nd exhibition. He rotated in with RB Rob Kelley and finished with 7 carries for 30 yards. (Kelley carried 11 times for 49 yards.) Perine figures to open the season 4th on Washington's depth chart behind Kelley, Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson. There's a chance he steps into a significant role at some point this year, but he's not worth a roster spot right now.

Washington HC Jay Gruden seemed happy with his 1st look at recently signed RB Adrian Peterson in game action Friday night. “I saw a big guy running pretty hard really,” Gruden told reporters afterward. “He ... had a couple good bounces, and, you know, the thing I like about some of his runs is they look like they’re like gains of ones [yard] and he’d fall forward for a gain of three. The first run of the day I thought it was a three-yard gain and he ends up second and three. I was impressed with Adrian and the way he ran.” Peterson carried 11 times for 56 yards, while Rob Kelley played just 3 snaps with the starters (and totaled 8 carries for 19 yards). That doesn't necessarily indicate a new depth chart. It certainly made sense to give Peterson more run to test out the new guy over an incumbent in his 3rd year with Gruden. Samaje Perine is also expected to return to action in the coming week. We'll see how this situation gets sorted out. In the meantime, we're not drafting any of Washington's 3 big backs until well into the double-digit rounds.

The Redskins have signed RB Adrian Peterson. AP is a future Hall-of-Famer, but his name is much bigger than his game at this point. He averaged just 3.4 yards per carry on 156 attempts between the Saints and Cardinals last year. His 2.3 yards after contact per attempt ranked 49th among 78 qualifying RBs, per Pro Football Focus. He finished 46th among 47 RBs in Football Outsiders' DVOA. The good news for Peterson is that his competition for early-down work in Washington is Rob Kelley and his career 3.9 yards per carry and Samaje Perine, who's sidelined with a sprained ankle. We'd still consider Kelley the favorite for the job right now, but Peterson will be worth monitoring closely over the next few weeks.
