What You Need to Know:

  • Henry Ruggs’ absence opened up opportunities for Jones. The veteran posted 47-546-1 on 70 targets (11.1%).
  • From Week 12 on, Jones saw 7+ targets in all but 1 game. He finished as a WR2 twice over that stretch.
  • Among 68 WRs with 60+ targets, Jones ranked 53rd in yards per route run; 48th in PFF receiving grade.
  • With only 11.6 YPC, he wasn’t anything close to a dynamic playmaker.
  • In Jacksonville, 2022 brought on the arrival of new HC Doug Pederson and target competition with Christian Kirk and Evan Engram.
  • Jones, 27, signed a 3-year, $24 million deal with $14 mil guaranteed. It’s a surprising sum given his production profile, but note that the Jags had cap space to burn.
  • Marvin Jones returns for year 2 following a 120-target, 73-catch season.
  • Trevor Lawrence struggled in year 1, but a lot can be traced to Urban Meyer’s failed stint. We expect a sizable year 2 jump.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

A former Round 2 pick, Jones’ career-best season (56-652-7 on 102 targets) came back in 2018 with Buffalo.

The Jags tossed him a bunch of money in free agency. But he’s unlikely to finish any higher than 3rd in targets for a passing game that’ll undergo a lot of change. Jones should go undrafted outside of deep leagues.

Zay Jones, WR JAC

Jones to become a Jaguar

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that former Raiders WR Zay Jones will be signing a 3-year, $24 million deal with the Jaguars that could be worth up to $30 million. Jones enjoyed a nice 2nd half to 2021 with the Raiders, but the former 2nd-round pick has mostly disappointed through 5 NFL seasons. It's tough to get excited about his upside with a team that is also adding WR Christian Kirk and TE Evan Engram to an offense that returns RB Travis Etienne from IR and still sports WR Laviska Shenault and TE Dan Arnold. Jones' arrival could be a bad sign for Marvin Jones, who has just 1 year left on his contract and would provide $3.5 million in cap savings if cut this offseason.

Raiders WR Zay Jones is a healthy scratch for today's game against the Packers. He joined the team just a couple of weeks ago, but this is still surprising considering how thin Oakland is at WR with Tyrell Williams out. Hunter Renfrow, Trevor Davis, Keelan Doss and Marcell Ateman will be the team's top 4 WRs today.

The Raiders have acquired WR Zay Jones from the Bills in exchange for a 2021 5th-round pick. Jones was a disappointment in Buffalo since being selected 37th overall in the 2017 draft, registering an ugly 46.4% catch rate and 11.5 yards per catch. We'll see if this change of scenery turns things around for him. Jones will find opportunity in Oakland, where the Raiders have very little at WR beyond Tyrell Williams, who's already dealt with a couple of injuries this season. The Bills, meanwhile, will trot out either Duke Williams or Robert Foster in Jones' old outside WR spot. Williams played 78% of the offensive snaps in Week 5 with Foster sidelined with a groin injury. We'll monitor the situations in both Buffalo and Oakland. But we wouldn't bother adding Williams, Foster or Jones to fantasy rosters right now.

Sirius XM's Adam Caplan said Sunday that Bills WR Robert Foster "will play as a rotational deep threat" and that the team's WR depth chart is "pretty much set in stone." That would mean John Brown and Zay Jones as the outside starters, Cole Beasley in the slot and Foster seeing limited time. All Bills wideouts are going late enough in drafts that you can take a shot on your favorite at low risk. But it's tough to see a path to true fantasy relevance for Foster after his intriguing 2018 rookie campaign.

Bills WR Robert Foster has been working with the backups early in training camp, according to the Buffalo News. The 1st-team offense has featured John Brown and Zay Jones as the outside WRs, with Cole Beasley in the slot. There's obviously plenty of time for Foster to make a move up the depth chart. But until we hear that he's running with the starters, he shouldn't be drafted as more than a late-round flier.
