An MRI on Redskins RB Derrius Guice's injured left knee revealed a torn ACL, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Ugh. That'll end the rookie's season after a buzz-worthy spring and summer. It's worth noting that this is the same knee that Guice hyperextended at LSU last year, although it's unclear if that had anything to do with the ACL. The silver lining here is that Guice will have over 12 months to get ready for the start of the 2019 campaign. Washington is now back to Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine as early-down backs. Neither is an inspiring option. Kelley is averaging 3.9 yards per carry through 2 NFL seasons, while Perine mustered just 3.4 as a rookie last year. Kelley ran ahead of Perine in Washington's preseason opener on Thursday night, so consider him the favorite to lead the Redskins in carries for now. But the situation will be worth watching over the next month. Neither guy figures to reach beyond RB3 status, though. RB Chris Thompson will continue to dominate passing-down work in this backfield.
Derrius Guice has sprained MCL
The initial diagnosis on Redskins RB Derrius Guice's injured knee is a sprained MCL, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The rookie is undergoing an MRI today to get more details. The severity of the sprain will determine exactly how long he's sidelined. We'll pass along another update when we get one. Rob Kelley played ahead of Samaje Perine in Thursday night's preseason opener, making him the favorite to serve as Washington's early-down back if Guice misses regular-season time.
