Derrius Guice Injury Updates

The Redskins stopped LSU RB Derrius Guice’s slide, taking him with the 59th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Guice reportedly slipped due to a bad pre-draft process which included missing meetings and workouts. Off-field stuff aside, he’s a borderline 1st-round talent. Guice was uber-productive on the ground for the Tigers, totaling 3,074 yards and 29 TDs on a 6.5 yards-per-carry average over the past 3 seasons. He ripped off 7.8 yards per carry across 2015 and 2016 in the same backfield as Leonard Fournette, who averaged 6.5 in those 2 seasons (although Fournette played through an ankle injury in 2016). Guice dealt a knee injury last year and saw his yards per carry dip to 5.3. When healthy, though, this guy is a explosive, tenacious runner who’s drawn Marshawn Lynch comps. The biggest question with Guice is his pass-catching ability. He caught just 32 balls over the past 3 seasons — although it’s worth noting that this current LSU offense doesn’t use its RBs in the passing game. Fournette, for example, totaled 40 receptions in 3 college seasons and then caught 36 balls as a rookie. This is a nice landing spot for Guice, who will only need to beat out Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley for the lead ball-carrying role. RB Chris Thompson will continue to dominate the pass-catching work.
