What You Need to Know

  • The Texans drafted Collins (6’4, 215) out of Michigan in Round 3 of the 2020 draft.
  • He wasn’t a big-time producer in college, due in part to a bad QB situation. But his market share numbers at least hit the thresholds we like to see.
  • At the Combine, Collins showed plenty of athleticism with a 77th percentile Burst Score, a 65% Agility Score and a 95th percentile catch radius.
  • As a rookie, Collins’ raw game showed. He ranked T-63rd among 76 WRs with 60+ targets in Pro Football Focus receiving grade; 64th in yards per route run.
  • He wasn’t elusive after the catch, forcing only 1 missed tackle on 33 catches (per PFF).
  • Collins’ 2 most targeted games (10 and 8) came with 2022 starter Davis Mills under center.
  • Brandin Cooks returns as the team’s WR1. But Houston only added rookie slot John Metchie (Round 2) over the offseason.
  • Metchie is recovering from a December ACL tear. He should be fine for Week 1, but his early effectiveness is certainly in question.
  • Collins slots in as the clear favorite for a starting outside role.
  • TE is a question mark for Houston; as is pass-catching ability out of the backfield.
  • Mills adds another element of unknown after showing some promise in ’21, albeit in just 11 starts.
  • Pep Hamilton, formerly Houston’s QB coach, enters year 1 as the OC. In 3 prior stops as OC (2013-2015 in Indy) his units ranked 15th, 1st and 9th in pass attempts. Andrew Luck started 39 of 48 games.
  • Expect a more balanced offensive approach this year, especially as Mills navigates his first full season under center. Volume is unlikely to be a major selling point for Collins.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

On the surface, Collins looks like a breakout candidate entering the ’22 season.

That’s certainly within his range of outcomes. But even with rookie John Metchie (ACL) a candidate to start slow, this offense is simply unlikely to support anyone other than Brandin Cooks outside of best ball leagues.

Brandin Cooks, WR HOU

Brandin Cooks out for Week 13

Texans WR Brandin Cooks (calf) is out for this weekend's game vs. the Browns. He evidently injured his calf on Thursday and didn't practice on Friday. We'll see if he misses time beyond Week 13. His absence on Sunday leaves Nico Collins as Houston's #1 WR, with Chris Moore and Phillip Dorsett the #2 and #3.

Texans WR Brandin Cooks (wrist) is listed as questionable for this weekend’s game vs. the Giants. He got in limited practices on Thursday and Friday. Between this wrist injury, his recent trade request and Houston’s lackluster passing game, Cooks is a shaky Week 10 fantasy play. WR Nico Collins (groin) is also listed as questionable after 3 limited practices.

Texans WR Brandin Cooks (wrist) did not practice on Wednesday. He's expected to play vs. the Giants this weekend -- if his health allows it. Cooks played through this wrist injury in Week 8. We'll see if he's able to practice tomorrow. WR Nico Collins (groin) got in a limited practice on Wednesday.

The Texans have downgraded WR Nico Collins (groin) to out for Sunday's game against the Titans. It's not a surprise. Collins missed practice all week, and HC Lovie Smith spoke about the injury as though a return was not imminent. We'll see whether Collins can make it back for the Week 9 meeting with Philadelphia. That's a Thursday night game, though, which won't help. WR Brandin Cooks gains target upside while Collins is out.
