Rest Of Way Outlook

Week 11
Arnold was a complete no show in week 12 failing to record a target on the week. This comes as big surprise as Arnold averaged over 8 targets a game in the prior 3 contests. Arnold still was second on the team in routes with 24 so the usage didn’t change. The issue now for fantasy managers is knowing his floor is 0, this could make it hard to trust him in tougher matchups. Another situation we should monitor is the return of former starting TE James O’ Shaungnessy. Prior to going down in Week 2, O’Shaungessy saw 8 targets in Week 1. This could potentially force Arnold into a timeshare capping his potential to be a TE1 down the stretch.
In week 12 the Jaguars take on the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are an average matchup for TEs this season as they are 20th in points allowed to the TE position. This includes allowing slower games to back end TE1s Dalton Schultz (1-14) and Hunter Henry (2-25) in the last two weeks. The TE landscape is rough so Arnold could be a low-end TE1 this week with Agnew out of the lineup, but it might smart to pickup another option for the stretch run.
Week 10
Arnold arrived in Jacksonville ahead of the Week 4 games in Cincinnati. He played a limited role in that game (32% of offensive snaps) but has seen his role grow since. From Week 5 on, Arnold has garnered the 5th-most targets among TEs and scored the 7th most PPR points despite not yet finding the end zone.

Arnold caught just 1 of 2 targets in the 1st half of Sunday’s loss to the Colts, but he finished with team highs of 5 receptions and 67 yards. That marked Arnold’s 4th game of 4+ catches and 60+ yards among the past 4.

One of his receptions against the Colts came up just short of the goal line. Arnold added a 2-point conversion, though.

He’s a solid-to-good weekly starter for PPR formats the rest of the way.
Week 9
Arnold remained a go-to option for the Jags in Week 9. He led the team in targets (7) and yards (60) while tying for the team lead in catches (4). He now ranks 3rd in targets, 3rd in catches, 5th in yards and 8th in .5 PPR points over his past 4 (per our own Jared Smola). Essentially a WR, Arnold has managed to breakthrough in an offense that’s not yet comfortable feeding Laviska Shenault a consistent role. Marvin Jones has struggled lately, too, falling shy of 40 yards in 4 of his past 5 matchups. Arnold will remain a TE1 streamer ahead of a Week 10 date at Indy.
Week 8
In a game the Jaguars trailed throughout, Trevor Lawrence threw 54 passes, and Arnold was 2nd on the team with 10 targets. With Seattle applying consistent pressure on the QB all afternoon, Arnold became a reliable checkdown option. Despite leading the team with 8 catches and 68 yards, the short passes kept him from having a gain of longer than 11 yards. Unfortunately, the team was rarely in the red zone, so Arnold never had a reasonable chance of finding the end zone.

Although he wasn’t great in his first 3 games with the Jaguars, he was targeted 13 times over his previous 2 contests, and in his last game, he was off and on the field quite a bit after taking a hit to the head. With WR skills on a team that needs a true 3rd WR, especially with D.J. Chark on IR, Arnold could easily see himself retain a solid target share and be a weekly starting option at a thin TE position.
Week 5
Arnold caught 6 of 8 targets for 64 yards in Week 5 against the Titans.
Arnold led the team in receiving and looked good after the catch on a couple of passes. His only gaffe was a lost fumble on the first drive of the game.
Arnold is on the streaming radar coming off an 8-target game. We’ll see in Week 6 if he can continue to build more chemistry with Trevor Lawrence.

Basic Stats Preseason Player Analysis

What You Need to Know:

  • A 2017 UDFA, Arnold — essentially a hulked up WR — posted a career-best 45-31-438-4 line last fall.
  • As for the catch-first nature of his game: Note that Arnold’s been asked to pass protect on only 8 career snaps. He’s on the field to run routes.
  • The 6’6 target ranked 5th on the Cardinals in catches; 3rd in receiving yards.
  • Arnold was fairly efficient on a per-route basis: His 1.47 yards per route run ranked 15th among 34 TEs with 40+ targets.
  • In mid-March, Arnold, 26, signed a 2-year deal with Carolina worth $6 million. Current Panthers OC Joe Brady coached Arnold in New Orleans from 2017-2018.
  • Ian Thomas led the 2020 Panthers in TE target share (5.8%). Carolina TEs combined for just 41 targets (7.7%).
  • Thomas was hyped as a breakout candidate last fall but fell flat despite a strong size/athletic profile (20-145-1). He remains on the team but figures to have his role reduced.
  • The Panthers added another piece to the position with Round 3 pick Tommy Tremble. The Notre Dame product is an excellent blocker yet unrefined as a pass catcher.
  • Carolina will roll out DJ Moore, Robby Anderson and rookie Terrace Marshall in most 3-WR sets. Christian McCaffrey returns after an injury-riddled 2020.
  • Carolina finished mid-pack in pass rate last year, so volume doesn’t project as an ally here.
  • New QB Sam Darnold also represents a bit of a wild card. His accuracy suffered in a bad situation with the Jets. But there’s at least optimism that he’ll creep towards average in a much better spot.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line

Arnold has the catch-first skill set we like out of a fantasy TE. He just doesn’t have the volume to make him dependable as an early-season streamer. Take a wait-and-see approach to the 1st-year Panther.

The Jaguars on Monday placed TE Dan Arnold on the COVID list. He had been designated last week to return from IR. This likely will knock him out for Sunday's game in New England, even if his injured knee is ready. James O'Shaughnessy remains Jacksonville's #1 TE.

Jaguars TE Dan Arnold (knee) has been designated to return from IR. He was expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee suffered in Week 12, so we'd be surprised if he was ready to play vs. the Jets on Sunday. But we'll keep an eye on the situation.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Jaguars TE Dan Arnold suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee Sunday against the Falcons and will miss 4-6 weeks. The timing -- with just 5 games remaining -- means it could end his season. Whether he makes it back or not, Arnold is certainly droppable in nearly all redraft formats. James O'Shaughnessy figures to be the next guy up at the position but likely falls short of Arnold's upside. O'Shaughnessy, after all, was already on the team when Jacksonville acquired Arnold from the Panthers earlier this season and vaulted him quickly to the top of the depth chart. Arnold's absence leaves behind a nearly 20% share of targets to be distributed. WR Laviska Shenault could be a prime beneficiary. Jamal Agnew's season-ending hip injury in Week 11 moved Shenault back into the primary slot role Sunday.

Jaguars TE Dan Arnold hurt his knee in the 1st half of Sunday's game vs. the Falcons. He's officially questionable to return. We'll pass along an update when we get one.

Update: Arnold has been ruled out.

The Panthers are set to trade TE Dan Arnold and a 3rd-round pick to the Jaguars in exchange for CB C.J. Henderson, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Henderson was the 9th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft but has obviously fallen out of favor in Jacksonville. It's a good pickup for the Panthers, who just lost rookie CB Jaycee Horn to a broken foot. Meanwhile, Arnold will have a good shot to emerge as the lead TE for a Jaguars team in desperate need of help at the position. Arnold will be worth monitoring -- but we'd only be adding him in deep fantasy leagues at this point. Carolina is left with Ian Thomas and rookie Tommy Tremble at TE.
