What You Need to Know:

  • Bryant arrived as a 4th-round pick in 2020 (HC Kevin Stefanski’s 1st season) and ranked 6th on the team, 2nd among TEs, in targets.
  • He beat David Njoku in targets, catches, yards and TDs that season. Bryant trails Njoku in 3 of those 4 categories for the past 2 combined, though, and sits tied in TDs. Njoku leads him 12.5 to 10.5 in yards per catch over that span and 8.4 to 7.1 in yards per target.
  • The Browns used the franchise tag to keep Njoku off the free-agent market this offseason and then gave him a 4-year contract worth nearly $55 million. The team also released TE Austin Hooper this offseason.
  • Cleveland has ranked 2nd and 4th in TE target share over Stefanski’s 2 seasons at the helm.
  • Bryant improved his catch rate, yards per reception, yards per route and Pro Football Focus receiving grade from Year 1 to Year 2. His yards per target increased by 2.0.
  • According to Sharp Football, only 3 teams ran 3+ WR formations less often than the Browns in 2021. No team lined up 3 TEs more often. That matched the team’s 2020 tendencies.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Bryant will be on the field more than most 2nd TEs. And there’s obvious handcuff upside in case of a David Njoku injury in possibly the league’s most TE-friendly offense. That’s not enough to make Bryant a draft consideration for most fantasy formats, however. And even his dynasty outlook was hurt by Njoku’s re-signing. Bryant’s rookie deal runs through 2023, so you’ll need to be patient if holding him there. His best current value is as a late best-ball selection.

Njoku reclaims lead role

Browns TE David Njoku returned to the top of the depth chart in Sunday's win over the Buccaneers and found the end zone. He ranked 2nd on the team in targets (7), receptions (5) and receiving yards (29) -- including a 12-yard TD late in the 4th quarter to send the game to OT. Pro Football Focus credited Njoku with the 3rd most routes run among Browns, 3 times as many as #2 TE Harrison Bryant. That marked a big rebound for Njoku vs. his Week 11 return from injury. He ran a route on 76.7% of Jacoby Brissett's 43 dropbacks. With Deshaun Watson back next week, Njoku looks like a weekly top-10 option the rest of the way.

Browns TE David Njoku was active and starting against the Bills for the 1st time since a knee injury knocked him out of Week 7. But he played about half as many snaps as TE Harrison Bryant and trailed the position leader by 10 routes and 4 targets. Njoku managed 2 catches for 17 yards among 3 looks. We'd bet on his playing time improving for a Week 12 date with the Buccaneers. Bryant caught 4 balls for 41 yards against the Bills on 7 targets, which ranked 2nd on the team.

Browns TE David Njoku (ankle) is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Dolphins. We’ll see if he can make it back from the high-ankle sprain for Week 11. When Njoku missed Cleveland’s last game, TE Harrison Bryant ran a route on just 42% of pass plays and finished without a target, so he’s not a bankable fantasy spot starter.

Browns TE David Njoku (ankle) missed practice again on Thursday. At this point, he's looking unlikely to play vs. the Dolphins this weekend. TE Harrison Bryant went target-less when Njoku missed Cleveland's last game, so he's not a viable fantasy play if Njoku is out on Sunday.

Browns TE David Njoku (ankle) has been ruled out for Monday night's game vs. the Bengals. He'll likely miss multiple games with his high-ankle sprain. Njoku's absence leaves Harrison Bryant as Cleveland's lead TE. TE Pharaoh Brown (concussion, neck) is listed as questionable after returning to a limited practice on Saturday.
