What You Need to Know:

  • Proche ranked 5th among Baltimore WRs in playing time last season.
  • Two of the 4 players ahead of him have since left the team. Marquise Brown and Sammy Watkins leave behind 31.9% target share with their departures. Rashod Bateman and Devin Duvernay return, after combining for 18.8% target share in 2021.
  • Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic named James Proche the standout WR of Ravens minicamp/OTAs. The long-time beat writer credits Proche’s toughness, confidence and good hands as reasons for him to be a “bigger contributor” this fall.
  • Proche looks like exclusively a slot player. His slot rate actually declined through college, but Proche has run 86.3% of his NFL routes from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus.
  • Duvernay also spent 60.8% of his pass snaps in the slot. Proche will need Duvernay to move outside more if he hopes to run as Baltimore’s #3 WR this season. Duvernay saw his 2020 time more evenly split: 47.3% in slot, 52.2% wide.
  • Proche ran just a 4.55-second 40 in pre-draft testing, significantly slower than Duvernay’s 4.39 and the 4.43 Bateman ran at his Pro Day.
  • Proche racked up receiving lines of 93-1,199-12 and 111-1,225-15 in his final 2 seasons at SMU.

Draft Sharks Bottom Line:

Behind TE Mark Andrews and WR Rashod Bateman, Baltimore has a lot to sort out in the passing game. Proche figures to battle Tylan Wallace for the #3 role, with Devin Duvernay looking like the favorite for the #2 WR spot. It’s probably not a high-upside role for either player, but we’ll see how the competition plays out.

Duvernay to IR, Ravens bring back Watkins

Ravens WR Devin Duvernay has been placed on IR with a foot injury he suffered in Tuesday's practice. It's unclear if he has a shot to return when first eligible for the Divisional Round of the playoffs, but his regular season is over. Baltimore added WR Sammy Watkins in a corresponding move. Watkins spent last season with the Ravens but mustered just a 27-394-1 line across 13 games. He looked equally washed with the Packers this season. Watkins joins Demarcus Robinson, DeSean Jackson and James Proche in the WR corps.

Ravens WR Demarcus Robinson (groin) is listed as questionable for Monday night's game vs. the Saints. He was added to the injury report on Friday and did not practice on Saturday, so he seems truly iffy for this one. Robinson tallied season highs with 8 targets, 6 catches and 64 yards last week but wasn't a bankable Week 9 fantasy play even before this injury. His absence would leave the Ravens with WRs Devin Duvernay, James Proche, Tylan Wallace and DeSean Jackson, who's expected to make his debut in this one.

Ravens WR Rashod Bateman (foot) missed his 2nd straight practice on Thursday. At this point, he seems unlikely to play vs. the Bengals on Sunday night. Bateman's absence would leave Baltimore with WRs Devin Duvernay, Demarcus Robinson, James Proche and Tylan Wallace.

Ravens WR James Proche (groin) is doubtful for Sunday's game vs. the Dolphins. He played just 5 snaps in the opener, so there's no fantasy impact here.

Three days after getting dumped by the Raiders, WR Demarcus Robinson has signed with the Ravens. It's obviously not a good look that Robinson couldn't crack a thin Vegas WR corps. But Baltimore's WR room is even weaker. Robinson will duke it out with James Proche, Devin Duvernay and Tylan Wallace for snaps behind WR Rashod Bateman. We'll keep an eye on Robinson but wouldn't spend a roster spot on him in any redraft or best-ball leagues.
